Happy Birthday to me: S&W 625-2 Model of 1989
1989 was a very good year for me...including ETS from the Army, C 2/9 Infantry, 7th ID.
Well, 'way back' then I was busy chasing things other than guns, or I might of bought a few more good ones.
So I recently got the bug for one of these, found several on Gunbroker and won this one. Pictures are from the auction, gun should be here next week.
Once this comes in, I'll clean it up and shoot it. And probably develop some reloads

Great looking revolver. I have been trying to resist buying one of these for almost a year. LGS has one and I have even negotiated an "out the door price" but, for some reason I just can't make myself buy the thing.
I love the .45 acp and have more than enough 1911's to go around. There is just something about that "Model of 1989" that looks right!

Good gun!
Sir, I am sorry to be the one to inform you but you are not done buying yet! Put the half moon clips in a drawer and forget about them! Find a place to buy a BUNCH of full moon clips(Ranch products, Moon clips .com, S&W, etc.) ! Next, to save your fingers, you will want(need) a moon clip demooner and a moon clip loader! I made my own demooner by filing the end of a piece of tubing! As for the loader there are many different types out there! You will enjoy your 625 very much, probably to the point you will want another, I have 5! Good luck! ! ! !

You'll find the 625 to be accurate and great fun to shoot. Moon clips are ok but you might want to find some 45AR brass too. I find using the clips a PIA although the advice to get a "demooner" is good if you do use them. Cast bullets (200 grain work well for me) are accurate and a delight to shoot. Enjoy.

My new revolver came in today - seller was super fast on getting it shipped out - payment arrived either Saturday or Monday and gun came in on Wednesday.....can't beat that!
Grips and box smell like mildew. Gun is super clean, no evidence on the recoil shield of ever been fired. Just a turn line, and I've been dry firing it too (with snap caps in a full moon clip). THREE (3) pound trigger pull in single action, very smooth.
Probably will have to get new grips, I can't stand the mildew smell and don't think it will come out.
Soon I will disassemble and check the innards and a light cleaning and mildew check.

Yes Jeff --- I NEED the unusual and odd. For the last several days researching 45 Auto Rim and loads. I need brass, shellholder, and some 250-260 grain Keith style bullets. I've got tons of 200-grain SWC loaded for 1911 pistols, but absolutely feel the NEED for custom loads for this pistol.
Hopefully some real pictures soon

Congrats on your new toy!
The Auto Rim cartridges definitely add another element to experiment with in the 45 wheelgun.
S-L cases are plenty strong enough to load to 45 Super levels.

Love my 625 JM and Thunder Ranch 22. 45acp is great in a revolver, and both of mine are super accurate and fun to shoot. Enjoy this one and the next 45acp wheelgun you pick up.

John I think your plan to change out the Pachmayrs grips is a good one. The early 625's with Pach's had issues with the grip screw interfering with the DA arch of the mainspring. I heard but never confirmed that S&W had Pachmayr move the screw position on later runs but from what I've learned from the guys here it looks like they just phased them out for better grips.
Either way a bit of bluing or grease anything that will transfer dabbed on the mainspring will show you if the problem exists. When the flat mainspring hits the screw it creates a stiff portion or knuckle in the later stage of your double action pull through. I never checked to see if Wolf springs eliminate this problem but should have. I shot pins and plates with mine a few years and loved the feel and balance so well I bought another. My first one was a big problem out of the factory but once I got it straightened out it was worth it. I got a lot of gunsmith business slicking these 625's up for these games then the sport kind of evaporated in my region.

Great gun, I think you will enjoy your 625-2. I use mine for a weekly centerfire pistol league. It's fired many thousands of rounds and never missed a beat. As others have mentioned, 200gr LSWC is a terrific round for recreational shooting.

Congrats, you are sure to enjoy it! I have a newer (2008) 625JM. I do believe it is my favorite shooter. I added a HI-VIZ front sight. Good for us older folks! Have not found the perfect wood yet. Tried several things. Bob

Great gun that will bring you many hours of enjoyment!!
I fail to understand the comments of others that full moon clips are such a pain.....it is so nice to drop in six and eject six simultaneously...when I shoot my 25-2 in USPSA matches the brass pickers just love to hand me my clipped up empties!
When I am loading my clips I just use a pair of needle nose pliers to snap the rounds in and then I use a demooner that I got from Dillon....super easy.
Many say that 45 AR brass is the way to go....I have a bunch of it that came with the gun and never use it...I like the full moon clips so much more...1/2 or 1/3 clips the story changes!

I don't get it either. Any S&W revolver I have that didn't come from the factory cut for Moon Clips, I have sent the cylinder to TK Custom to have them cut for Moons. 357s, 38s, six shot, seven shot, five shot. You name it. It is simply the fastest way to load and unload your revolver.
For self defense moon clips are no brainer. I have about 15 S&W revolvers, and they are all suited to carry. If I am going to carry it, it needs to be able to be reloaded quick. With Moons I can reload any of my wheel guns almost as quick as any of my semi-autos.
There is no comparison between a speed loader and moon clips. Moon clips are much faster.

Those 5" models were considered perfect for bowling pin shoots at the time. Especially with the "Grabber" bullets.
