Just bought my first (doubt it will be my last) model 29 and I'm trying to figure a couple things out. Thought maybe I would ask the experts so I'm putting a couple questions out there hoping for some assistance. I'm new to the S&W forum and I hope someone out there can answer what will probably be easy questions to some regarding the S&W model 29-5 I just bought. Gun was manufactured in the early 90's, '91 or '92. Came with original cardboard box. I was hoping for some help to define some of the specs on the box.
Product Code - 101285
Features Code - IFS
Special Order # - 1304
Barrel - 7 1/2
Love the revolver just want to know more. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

Are yo sure it's not 8 3/8" on the barrel length? From thr throat to the muzzle?

jimbo,

Can you tell us the s/n?

The ship date based on the Spec. Ord. code is......
October 31, 1991.
IFS is the feature code for.........
Interchangeable Front Sight

The gun would of come with 5 interchangeable front sight blades that are easily switched without tools. The sight base bis spring loaded. Push the blade backwards, while lifting up. The blade should come right out. The extra blades, if you don't have them, can be obtained from S&W by calling their customer service.

Double check that Product Code because it's one I've never seen before. I'd like to lean more about this gun. If you can take pictures, it's super easy to post them here on the Forum.

"The Magna Specials"

Welcome Jimbo...according to "The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson" 3rd edition, page 203, your revolver with product code #101285 definitely came with a 7 1/2" Full Lug Interchangeable Front Sight barrel...hence the designation FL and IFS. It is one of "The Magna Specials"...I hope this helps...I wish I knew more to tell you...Roger

It's been some time since I have looked at these. If the gun has a high polish blue and the top strap is probably not drilled and tapped with 3 holes then this is one of the Magna Classic overrun guns. Thus the term Magna Special.
If this is correct then the rear sight is held down by a small screw in the front versus the larger one used in newer guns. The rear sight is also only found on the 29-5 and no other29's.s (629-3 Classic/DX/Magna Classic and overrun) If you lose it you may never find another.
Congrats on a nice find, and a beautiful revolver.
The front sight blade comes out without the use of any tools.

I am very anxious to see a pic of this one!

I picked up a 629 Magna Classic overrun a while back and haven't ever seen another one.

Thanks for all of the information guys. This really helps. As I thought, ask the professionals if you want good information. I will post pictures tomorrow.
Serial number is: TJC0027

I've seen TJA's and TJB's, but this will be the first TJC. They were all either long barrel M629's or M29's made in 1990 or 1991. I wonder if the "TJ" stood for anything?

I have 5 different variations of the 29's with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. All are full lug, some have fluted cylinders and some un-fluted cylinders. All mine are 29-5's. They are: The Magna Classic; Classic Magnum II (1 of 500); one of the Horton "12 Revolvers" called the "Attack" (1 of 196 per Jinks letter), the "IFS" model mentioned above and a parts gun from put together by the Performance Center marked "Classic Series" on the side plate (my info is that there were 20 of these).

These make a neat sub collection in them self's. The 5 inch full lug - Classic style 29's are my favorites but these 7 1/2 inch models are a close second!

29-5

Have had and shot for many years a 29-5, IFS, 6 1/2 FL,
deep notch rear sight, very dark blued 29 classic. Originally
had Hogue stocks with S&W insignias.

I have the 7 & 1/2" "The Attack" as well as it's twins the Classic Magnum & Classic Magnum II. Nice guns. I didn't know The Attack was quite that low in production. Thanks for the info.
I also have the 629-2 Mt Lion and the 24-4 44 Special. (is it "The Hostiles"?)

Kernel, You are correct - it was Elliet Brothers.

629Shooter, I am not aware of any 7 1/2 inch barrel Classic 29's? I am only aware of 5, 6 1/2 and 8 3/8 inch Classic and Classic DX.
