I am in the market for a new .22LR revolver. Have looked at the new Ruger GP100 and the Smith 617s. The Ruger had an extremely stiff hammer pull and all the 617s had canted barrels, but really nice triggers & hammer pulls.

So, I am thinking about dropping down to a smaller frame, which takes me down to the Ruger SP101 and the Smith Model 63 (3" barrel).

The SP101 has a lot of reviews about a stiff trigger pull.

For those of you who own a new Model 63, how do you find the trigger pull and hammer pull, compared to say a 617?

And, are you happy with the Model 63?

I have a Md 17, 18, 34 and 63 with barrel sizes of 6, 4, 2 and 4 inches respectively. For the range I prefer the 17 and 18 for great triggers and outstanding accuracy. For hiking, and plinking I prefer the 34 and 63. They are fun guns and very comfortable to carry although I feel the triggers and accuracy are not as good as on the 17 and 18. If you force me to choose just one to keep it would be the Model 63. It's kind of a blend of the others. Just the right size (for me), stainless steel and excellent accuracy. I don't know how much the new ones are but the early ones are getting to be very pricey. I doubt that you can go wrong with any of the guns you are considering but for me, it wold be the 63.

I am happy with a recently purchased 3" 63-5. The trigger was stiff but is getting smoother with more use. Operationally it has been perfect, with no extraction or loading issues. My wife keeps trying to swipe it from me. It gets a lot of use on each range trip.

How would you characterize the hammer pull for SA shooting? Is it easily cocked with one thumb?

I have the original stainless model 63. I bought it new, and of all the handguns I own, it would be the last one I would sell. It has excellent accuracy and versatility.

No better revolver action than S&W for the money. My 63 is very nice. Light and crisp single action pull with minuscule creep and a light and steady double action.
However, it's at S&W now because of leading around the back of the barrel. No doubt they will fix it.

That is nasty looking. What brand of ammo have you been using?

How many rounds did you fire to get that dirty? I really like my mine and wrote a thread on it several weeks ago. SA pull is crisp, DA pull smooth but not light. Cocking using hammer easy. Accuracy is very good!

If I had to pick one it would be the 617 four inch.
