I have seen only a few guns with laser etched serial numbers, such as the 625-5. The number is etched under the top strap above the cylinder and on the bottom of the grip frame (as usual). Does Smith do this only for special models like the 625-5 Stocking Dealer Special, or is it more common than I realize? The ones i have seen are on guns from the mid-90's and seem to be special runs.

Earlier Performance Center models, 686s, 627s, 629s, etc.,
have that feature...not sure if all PC models have it though.

Perhaps they tried it for a while and realized it could be removed fairly easily. I hear the laser etching on some stainless guns can be buffed off, especially if someone is polishing the gun.

BATFE regs require a certain depth for serial numbers. I'd bet there is another place with a stamped number.

Actually no. I had a 625-5 a while back and the only places were under the top strap as shown in my original post and on the bottom of the grip frame. Both were laser etched.

Interesting. Maybe they got a variance, or something has changed lately.
Title 27 CFR chapter 11 part 478 (478.92 a1 i and ii, as well as 479.102 a 1 and 2 say this:

For firearms manufactured
or imported on and after January
30, 2002, the engraving, casting,
or stamping (impressing) of the serial
number must be to a minimum depth
of .003 inch and in a print size no
smaller than 1/16 inch; and
(ii) By engraving, casting, stamping
(impressing), or otherwise conspicuously
placing or causing to be
engraved, cast, stamped (impressed)
or placed on the frame, receiver, or
barrel thereof certain additional information.
This information must be
placed in a manner not susceptible of
being readily obliterated, altered, or
removed. For firearms manufactured
or imported on and after January 30,
2002, the engraving, casting, or
stamping (impressing) of this information
must be to a minimum depth of .003"

Does your pistol have a born on date before that? Like I said, the regs could have changed lately. They do that a lot. It's also possible that those particular parts of the regs have "sunsetted" like a the so-called assault weapons" ban.
