S&W 500 Without the Internal Lock
I was offered such a revolver. Does it really exist? I thought all 500s have the lock. Please help.

All will have it. There are aftermarket plugs that fill the hole if it is removed. If you look where the lock would be you should see the plugged hole.

Also the slot in the frame (by the hammer) for the flag. Could you post a pic?

No pictures yet but the seller swears that there is no lock.

As far as I know, that animal does not exist. If it does, that is the only S&W 500 I will buy. I own lots of S&W revolvers, but none with the lock or plug and never will. But that's my opinion, I could be wrong.

It is possible, at least in theory, that someone could have welded the hole up. More plausible is the seller either doesn't know what he/she is talking about, or they are scamming you.

I heard a story yesterday...
Your question makes me wonder if there's another prototype out there floating around.

I'm just sorta thinking out loud here, but if a S&W 500 won't accidentally trigger the lock via recoil, nothing will . . .

The S&W 500 is very heavy. The only two "lockups" I am personally familiar with occurred with a 329 44 magnum and a 357 magnum(don't remember #). Both firing heavy loads in Scandium frames.

In my limited experience, the 329 w/ wooden grips has more felt recoil than my 4" 500 and is almost as uncomfortable as a 340 MP. I've said before that little rascal is like shaking hands with the devil.
And so not to hijack or drift, my 500 has no lock thanks to John and "the plug".

Well, you are right about no factory 500s w/o an ILS. I've had 5, 500 Mags, all with ILSs, none have ever had any issues. I have over 1000 rds out of one of the two I now have and which are keepers.
There are folks out there on this forum with far more rounds down the tube than I and I am confident that none of them have had any issues.
Don't like it, remove it and plug it if that pleases you. Old issue, don't like ILS and modern guns you give up variety, better materials and wonderful big bore beasts like the 500 and 460. Your loss. Don

If you want a .500 X-Frame, it will have a lock, or the hole where the lock used to be. They came about after S&W went to the IL. Don't like the lock, remove it or don't buy an X-Frame. I have several thousand rounds thru my .460 X-Frame and have never experienced a lock-up due to lock failure. What you need to worry about more, is parts(like the extractor rod, sights, cylinder release button, etc) loosening up due to the shockwaves that travel thru the firearm everytime you pull the trigger.
