Default Buying a 629-1

I recently sold a safe-queen 4" 29-2 that I'd had a few years for a nice profit. Been on the lookout for a replacement shooter-grade 4" 44 magnum as a replacement. So...

I'm going to look at this 629-1 tomorrow (at least I *think* it is a -1) that a guy has for sale locally. His asking price is $650 and he said he's already had an offer for $625. I told him that I want to check it out and that if it is as good as it looks in these two photos, I'll give him his $650 asking price for it.

Probably not exactly a steal, but since just about any mechanically solid N-frame seems to be going for around $600 or more these days, I figure I can't get hurt on it at that price - as long as the timing and lockup are good and there's no serious end-shake.... right?

Default I would say that you are allright with that.

But with the non factory grips, I would not give them any more than that. I bought one in what looks like similar condition two or three years ago for five bills. And it had the original grips.

Are those not factory grips? I thought they were since they are just like the ones that came from the factory on my Classic Hunter 29-3, which is pretty close to the same vintage (mid '80's).

BTW, I already have a nice un-numbered set of N-frame magnas that will look just about perfect on this one. They're not pristine, but in nice condition - very comparable condition to the rest of the gun.

To me, five bills sounds like a steal - even 2 or 3 years ago, and prices have gone up quite a lot in the last 2 or 3 years - or at least they have around this area...

I think the price is fair. 4" 629-1s aren't growing on trees anymore.

Yeah, I just checked GB completed auctions and the most comparable one that has sold recently went for $750 + shipping wearing Pachmayr Presentation grips.

There was one that went for $655 + shipping - but it had some pitting in the finish and football targets with most of the finish worn off.

I think I'll be doing at least a little better than just OK at $650 if it's tight.

I paid $615 for a nice 6" 629-1 with its box and goodies four years ago so I would say the seller's asking price is fair.

But I am pretty sure that the 29-1s cam with wood grips. But as I said, if there is nothing wrong with the gun 650 is an OK deal. Especially if you want the gun, I say go for it.

Fair price for a 629_1. I have 3 of them. 2 of them I made into 45 Colts. All work well.

Default Tody's reality $ $ $ $

Today's prices have very little to do with stainless steel N-frames for $600, 22 LR ammo for 89¢ per 50 rounds, primers for $12 per thousand, or smokeless powder for $18 / pound.

Prices are considerably higher today because of anti-gun politics, huge increase in demand for everything firearms related, and older buyers wanting it NOW because they can afford the item, not next week at 10% higher price.

What I paid for 14 firearms in 2013 means nothing today, except for me to say I cannot afford to buy today what was bought in 2013. In 2013, I was told by the Forum experts that I paid $100 to $300 too much for individual guns. Today's prices are $400 to $500 higher than my purchase price.

My two "cheapskate" buddies are constantly complaining that lasts year's price at $25 too high was an absolute steal because today the price is $400 too high for the same item.
