Looked at a 629-2
Yesterday I looked at a 629-2. It had a turn ring that was almost shines, however it was nice & tight in the lockup. No push off, timing was spot on. It had pachmeyer grips on it & no box, papers etc. The thinner barrel was interesting compared to the other 44's I have seen. $499 was the price

I don't remember seeing "mountain gun" on it but I can go look again. Had the same grips & I believe sights as those.

If it is a dash 2 it'll be a Mountain Revolver. They started calling them Mountain Guns with later revisions. Whatever the case, that's an unheard of price these days unless the gun is trashed. Keep us up on what you do.

IF YOUR QUESTION IS, "SHOULD I BUY IT?", THE ANSWER IS A RESOUNDING YES ! ! ! IN FACT, I WILL BE VERY SURPRISED IF THE NEXT PERSON, AFTER YOU, THAT SAW IT, DID NOT SNAP IT UP........
AS IS OFTEN SAID IN THE GUN PURCHASING GAME----"YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE".....

It's still there. Seems like a nice gun. No "mountain gun" but it matches the descriptions above.

They have had it about a week. Took it in on trade. Other than the sharpe turn line, it feels very good. It satisfies my want of a 4" 44 N frame. I failed to get photos of it.

Even if it turned out to be a 624 its a good deal....and...Yes the 629-2 only says .44 Magnum on the right side barrel,
the 629-3 and up say Mountain Gun

I did put it on layaway. I have to figure out the 1886 deal first, so that's why I did it that way. It clearly says 629-2 on the yoke when you open the cylinder. Has the rounded edges on the front of the cylinder also.

My 629-2 doesn't say anything about being a Mountain Revolver. Are you guys saying it is a Mountain Revolver anyway? I thought it was a Classic actually.

I honestly wasn't going to buy it, just wanted to talk about it when I made the post. However, after reading the comments I couldn't walk away from it. I'll go down this week & see about the trade for the 1886. Then I'll plan when I can get back to MT & pick up this revolver. I'll post photos when I do.

The only 629-2's with a 4" tapered barrel and bead blasted finish have been Mountain Revolvers.

Is that the only 629-2 that is a MR? Sorry but I'm slow and I get confused easily (apparently).
My 629-2 has an 8 3/8" barrel with a full underlug and an unfluted cylinder.

Mountain Gun: When you absolutely, positively have to climb up the mountain and still have enough energy left to draw with the quickness... accept no substitutes
I think everyone wants a Mountain Gun, or just doesn't know it yet, but they are relatively few and far between – especially pre-lock versions essentially "half off" like the one the OP has on layaway. They look pretty cool with that 4" tapered barrel and must be a joy to carry for an N-frame. Even the name sounds bad ***.
Now, don't get me wrong – your 629-2 with the mile long barrel is also pretty cool. But it was clearly intended for the open plains and not something anyone would really want to lug up a mountain or have to pull out of a holster in a hurry
Even my 629-3 Classic with a 5" barrel and full underlug is at best a Hill Country cousin of the MG. So I guess we'll both have to keep our eyes peeled for our very own Grail Gun. Not that I'm actively looking right now, but I keep telling myself "one of these days" I'll find one and the time will be right. And half-off wouldn't be bad either while I'm day dreaming

LOL Actually I like the one I have really well. I am a bona fide hillbilly after all and a long range hand gun is a good thing. Mostly I discovered the bear invasion (they must have been planning it for years the way they pulled it off!) and I like being able to say howdy so that they hear me good. I actually bought it as more or less a favor for my brother who needed to raise money for a lawnmower since his had quit. But then I discovered there was a large population of bears so I decided to keep it.
