Went to the range today...
... with my 6" 686-4 and my 4" 19-4, firing .357 magnum ammo. Everyone else at the range was firing black plastic 9mm pistols, and getting dinner-plate-sized groups at 5 yards. My holes were all touching at 10 yards. Theirs sounded like pop-pop-pop. Mine were boom...boom. Felt good to have a crowd around me to see what I was shooting, and ask what it was.

That sounds like a great time.
I have the best of both worlds. Revolvers and semis go with me. When I'm doing defense practice, saucer to plate sized groups are good. Shooting my 686, biw that's a LOT different.

I've noticed that my blued autos don't get much notice, but if it's stainless someone is always inquiring.
And revolvers are always intriguing to the "plastic" community...

NovaJoe, I have experienced the same reaction. Most of those that approach me are in their 20s and 30s. They came along after the rush to switch from revolver to auto loaders. They have had little exposure to the goodness of a good revolver. I allowed one to handle one of my revolvers and he was immediately taken by the smoothness of the mechanicals of it.
I think that perhaps he will be looking at revolvers on his next visit to the gun store.

NovaJoe... I know exactly how you feel.
While at the range it seems I'm surrounded by black plastic autoloaders, with a sprinkling of 1911s in the mix.
I ALWAYS have at least one big-bore S&W revolver with me, and when the BIG BOOMS! start, you can count on a crowd reaction. I can't help it... I kinda like it. I don't shoot the magnums as much as I used to, but .44 Specials still seem to do the trick.
Best wishes everyone!

Same here. I'll admit to owning some plastic. But, I enjoy magnum revolvers too, and I shoot them well. I'm almost positive that a few younger range members have bought their first S&W because of me.

There's nothing wrong being an equal opportunity shooter. I love my wheel gun...but I also love Berettas (hint...name!) & I have no shame in saying so.
It is a good feeling hearing the boom though!

All of my 4 handguns are "old school", and all have beautiful wood grips. However, the one that has guys coming over to look and talk is my S&W model 41, which I've has for 20 years.

I can see that. I've never owned one. But, it's "the only one like it."
I turned a few heads last fall, when I brought my buddy's R8 with me to the range. Between its "interesting" looks, and the 8X 357 Magnum, it got some attention.

Great post NovaJoe. Reflecting on my last weeks indoor shoot, I too was surrounded by rapid fire at 3-5 yards all coming from semi's. I wanted to ask, "who is shooting buckshot" as their groups were non existent.
I calmly ran my standard bullseye target down to 30 feet and kept up steady DA fire at a reasonable pace. Every once in awhile out if my peripheral vision I could catch a glimpse of someone from another bay checking out my 586L comp. It was hard to conceal my wry smile.

I think some just like the boom. I've gotten a look or two when a revolver comes out but also when I shoot my M&P357c...it has a fair boom factor.
I agree with petepeterson's comment on blue getting less attention than stainless...with the younger crowd anyway. My SIL will get more looks with his Ruger GP100 than I will with a 586.

I normally load my model 29 4" and 686 4" with 2400 powder...
at the range besides the boom factor, the fireball puts the range on pause. Main response from others is WOW!
I get a chuckle out of that.

Alton, my next-door neighbor bachelor friend who is in his late 20's enjoys guns. His are mostly black guns, but he also has a collection of World War II rifles. His handguns are all semi-autos and until he met me, he'd never ever fired a revolver. So out on my patio, I gave him a small talk about why I love a fine double-action revolver. He began to appreciate the deep black mirror finish, the craftsmanship, the workings of a S&W revolver.
A few days later, we went to the range and Alton was shooting his favorite DA/SA 9mm semi-auto. We were shooting 6" steel plates at 15 yards. Finally, I had Alton shoot my 6" 19-3 Combat Magnum. The 19 was loaded up with standard velocity .38 Specials. I told Alton to shoot the plates double-action at the same speed he shoots his 9mm. Alton dropped all six plates. Alton ejected the spent brass, looked down at the revolver and said, "John, now I get it. I get why you love your revolvers."
My S&W revolvers are:
4th Model "Pocket Gun" in .32 S&W
34-1 "Kit Gun" in .22 LR
15-4 "Combat Masterpiece" in .38 Special
19-3 "Combat Magnum" in .357 Magnum
625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt
Thank you for reading.
God bless,
Birdgun

I have replaced all my plastic with steel, Glocks are gone, all but my G19. replaced by a Python, and 5 Smiths. Going back to the collection I had in the 80's. When I go shooting at the range now, the youth line up to see my humble collection of revolvers. Not having to bend over and pick up brass is a wonderful thing also.

What you are saying is so true! I took my Glock out today. It's that M42 380. Threw a box on the ground (12" by 12") and went back 30 feet. Now that's really close for me. . .a mere 10 yards. Hit the box two times out of six shots. I do not like semi-autos! I used to go out to the lake and shoot turtle's heads off at over 25 yards with my Smith. With a DA semi, I might as well be throwing rocks at them.

I'm one of the "kids" at the range. At 37, it's still funny to me considering my soldiers are in their early 20's....enough on that one. I shoot revolvers and 1911's, and so do my wife and kids. Always fun running 45/9mm/22lr in three straight lanes, or 44/38/22 in revolvers. It's fun to see the look on the generation above and around shooting Tupperware, especially when Momma grabs the 44, loads it with specials and starts making the black disappear at 25yds, and everyone around us is at 7yds. Kids get to shoot close at 15yds. Hope the weather holds out tomorrow, it's Range day after the kids basketball games

I borrowed my dad's Model 57 last year for deer season and right before deer season I was at the range getting it sighted in. Apparently people look at you like you're crazy when you shoot a revolver better at 50 yards than they do their deer rifle.
It's got a scope on it, it's not that hard. I shot 50 yards with my 4" Model 28 first to make sure I could do it.

I've had a couple people tap me on the shoulder and ask what the hell I'm shooting. I think I've converted a couple people.

Why choose one or the other? I have AKs and ARs too. It's like the classic Maryanne or Ginger question on a deserted island. I will take both!

Back in my college days, my roommate had a 6" M28 and we had worked up some very accurate handloads. We went to the range and there were a couple of guys trying to sight in two Marlin .30-30s. They were shooting at a deer target and the groups looked more like shotgun patterns.
We sat a couple of gallon milk jugs out at 100 yards. After we blew up those jugs with the M28, the deer hunters packed up and left.

My Magnums are so awesome at the range that they make brass fly. Semi-auto spent brass stuck in the foam over my head falls out from the BOOM percussion
The first time it happened, I stopped and had a WTH? moment. "How did that happen?" since I knew no one was shooting in the lanes next to me. LOL
