After 50yrs Of Shooting 3 Firsts For Me
I've owned close to if not more than 100 various guns since the early 60s with the overwhelming majority being S&W revolvers.Today I bought a revolver with a nickle finish in .44 Special and with an IL.All 3 are firsts for me unless I count a nickle Model 59 that I owned for 30 minutes before trading it away for a snub 686-4
Price was very fair I think so I made the FTF deal
The 4th Edition of the SCSW is very short on 21-4 info.
This nickle 44spl revolver doesn't have a Thunder Ranch serial so it's one of a 2007 vintage?
I don't care about it's value or rarity I'd just like to know if they're better for shooting or staying in the safe.It appears to have had a cylinder full of ammo shot through it but not much more.
No original box came in the deal.
Excuse my fingerprints.

Very nice.
I just got a Nickel 442. I didn't know there was a Nickel version.

I would not give a second thought to shooting an internal lock model.
It'll turn to dust in your safe before gaining any collector value.

1. I love N frames.
2. I love 44 special
3. Nickel is a very durable finish as long as you keep it away from ammonia.
4. Why on earth would you think about parking it?

Take it out and shoot it! I love my Model 21-4 and I'm sure you will like yours even more after you shoot it!

I bought 2 boxes of Rem 44spl back on Black Friday Rem sale with rebate.
Now I can use them before reloading the caliber.

The one thing I am disappointed about the "new" old style S&W revolvers is the choice of ****** grips (the original posters style)...and I'm calling them grips because they don't deserve to be called stocks. I've bought a few retro revolvers lately, and the grips are the only letdown.

I have a box full of vintage original grips with silver and black washers dating to the 50s,60s,70s and 80s.
No shortage of replacements here.

That's a tough call! I have a gun that is almost as interesting, but it doesn't quite compare to the obvious utility of a RB N-frame .44 Special. [I have a 22-4 nickel 1917 repro which has fairly usable sights, and functions well with Pachmayr SN-S Presentation grips, and, of course, The Plug.]
From your original post, it appears that your age and experience are similar to mine. I am 72, and have owned about 100 firearms, maybe only half of them from Springfield.
I think that it is very much up in the air whether the 2007 guns will some day be super collectible. However, to my mind, a round-butt (w/Tyler) N frame in a caliber which starts with 4 is an interesting and useful gun right now, and that's even before you know it won't snag on your covering garment.
I already have a Kramer holster for it (actually for a sub-caliber 520 or a "Mountain Gun"), so it should be obvious that I lean more towards utility than collectibility.
At your age, my recommendation is that you enjoy the gun while you can. If you actually have heirs who will appreciate the guns, hell, go ahead and give them to them NOW, while you can see that they went where they were supposed to.
Leastways, that's how I see it.

I bought it blind> no knowledge of the model.
Was looking for a 3" 44spl but took the plunge on this one found in Georgetown TX
It will go to the range tomorrow for some hole punching.
One day I'm going to have to mossy on down your way to a SA show!

I don't believe in safe queens, carving up nice guns with ugly engraving or making other added ugliness.
The question posed was in reference to the model's info. From the moment it was in my hands it's first range trip was being planned.
Oh my god, maybe I'm too old to shoot. You young'ins ready to walk in my moccasins

OK,the factory N Round Butt Combats don't look too shabby.
Not a lot of factory wood choices for N RB grips.

Also try the Speer 200 grain Gold Dot ammo.
It has worked well for me in a variety of 44 specials and leaves no lead.
Reloading with 6-6.5 grains Universal or Unique and that same bullet yields a duplicate load.
Even cheaper to buy Starline brass and start from scratch.
I prefer the nickel plate but that's just me.
I sometimes use a leather cartridge carrier.
These are Spegel extended boot grips on a 3" 624 (ebony).

Take a look at the Altamont conversion Target grips.
They are well made and fit my hands (which are admittedly larger than normal).
S&W uses these on several models.

I already have some Starline and Remington Brass.
My 1st plan is about 5.0gr of Trail Boss under a 240gr hard cast LSWC from Xtreme Bullets. They have 15% off and FREE shipping this weekend.I have a 5lb jug of Trail Boss and lots of Federal LP primers.

Cool. Good plan.
I get about 650 fps with 5 gr Trail Boss and a Rainier 240 PFP. 5.3 gr. gives 675 fps.
That's about as low as I would go with plated bullets for fear of sticking one.
They have the most friction of any bullet out there.
You should get maybe another 50 fps out of a plain cast bullet.
I have a couple boxes of the Xtreme plated bullet but prefer the Rainier.
Those have a bit of a hollow base like the Speer which I think helps with the obturation in slower target loads.
After several decades of cleaning guns I have finally gone away from plain cast bullets for target shooting
now that the plated and coated ones are becoming more common.
I still use heavy GC cast bullets in the 445 and 444 where they are naturals and jacketed options are limited.

The grips are very nice grained REAL wood and not laminate or Dymondwood

Those are the factory grips that came on the Thunder Ranch Model 21-4.

The nice thing is the front sight is pinned on. I like the sight picture of the SDM partridge. They have several heights to aid sight in.

Have the same gun, purchased new in 2010 or 11. Can't understand the RB frame, no matter how many people defend it. Standard Pach SB designs fit acceptably, the frame pin secures the grip in the corresponding grip recess.

This will probably get me tarred and feathered here, but I had one of the Thunder Ranch guns a few years ago, and I too HATED to stocks. I replaced them with a set of round to square butt Houges and really liked the way they felt and looked. They gave the gun a "serious business" look about it, and as a side benefit covered most of the "golden chicken" on the side.
I've got two 44 Specials now. A 24-3, and a 396-1. I blame it on Skeeter Skelton.

Last night I carefully removed the side plate off the 21-4
All 3 screws had red loctite on them but came out with a correct fit screw drivers and a little umph. The strain screw was tight but came out with more umph..The screw heads are pristine and showed no signs of ever being touched.
The internal parts were bone dry without a speck of lube of any kind.
This is my 1st first hand experience with MIM and the IL.
The hammer reminds me of my Hopalong Cassidy cap gun from when I was six.I don't remember if it was the hard to find 4" or the standard 5"?
The rebound slide looks like black plastic
Well all the parts came out and went back in with a light coating of Rem Oil.I left the firing pin dry.
Ah,nothing like all my others with hammer mounted firing pins.
Range session delayed until tomorrow.
My Lee grey .44 Spl 4 die set arrived this morning plus a 4 hole turret.
I think I'll make up a few loads with a Lee Hand Press first.

I now own 3 IL revolvers, and one is my carry piece. I have put enough rounds through them to be satisfied with their reliability.

Stakeout, nice looking 21-4. Mine has a date of 9-30-05. No Thunder Ranch markings either. I see 4 differences right off between ours. The lettering size, stocks, the cyl release and mine has no S&W logo. My product code is 150013
