Picked this up from a buddy who bought it for his wife but she said it felt like a cannon and wasn't comfortable with it. Knowing I'm never one to say no to any kind of a gun purchase, much less a Smith, I was his first call and 30 minutes later I'm staring at it in my hand

But this is the first J frame I have owned and I'm assuming it's a square butt so the first and only modification I need to make is too much of my hand hangs off the bottom of the grip so I need an aftermarket grip.... which is a shame because it comes with two grips already.

The problem is as I'm looking at all of these aftermarket grips they're not saying the words I want to hear, like 2 inches longer than the standard grip, or extra large to fit your whole hand!

Just a picture of the grip and how much. So can anybody tell me where I can find the longest rubber grip available that would fit my entire hand? Or maybe not the longest but just any good rubber grip that will fit any normal hand completely? I have small hands and at present all of my pinky and half of the next finger hangs off.

I wear an extra large glove and Pachmayr Compact grips work for me.


I trimmed them for speed loaders.

It has a round butt grip frame. If concealment is not an issue there are full size (as in the same dimensions for a K or N frame) Pachmayr rubber stocks that fit your gun. They are almost as tall as the gun is long .

Wow, thanks for the pic that really helped but here's the thing "Monk" I can't have any part of my hand hanging over and your pinky looks like it's doing that, not by much, but there's one thing i have to have for me is a nice firm grip! Regardless of the size of the gun

How much longer would you say that grip is than the standard grip?

Then I guess I cannot determine if it's a round or square butt based upon the fact that the grips that come with it is Square at the bottom? So thank you for clarifying that because I would have indeed gotten a square butt!!!!!

But a little confusion still, are you saying that I can buy a grip for a K or N frame (round butt) and it will fit the J frame?? Good thing I made this post if that is correct because I would have never guessed!!

It's a J frame! That means it is a small, light gun with a significant recoil and meant for concealment, rather than to be a comfortable target gun. I love mine for it's intended purpose.

Edit: K or N frame grips will not fit your round butt J frame. Some J frame grips are larger than others

I would call Herrett's Stocks, they will make J-frame grips in any size you want. If you prefer rubber Pachmayr makes some bigger options like the American Legend or Gripper.

Thanks for specifying its a small light gun made for concealment... but it doesn't HAVE to be used for that purpose and they can be used for other things! I'm so glad that you find the handle appropriate for your use, but I do not find it appropriate for my use!

These grips look perfect and are made for the J frame and are oversized!

Currently manufactured factory combat rubber grips will fit your round butt j-frame and hand just fine, pinky finger and all. They even have the S&W logo. Should be cheap too, they're pretty common.

That price of $7.99 was really hard to beat!!! The Hogues I got were $22 but at the end of it all I like the fact that the Hogues came up about an inch higher and covered that exposed flat spot just below where the hammer would go and yours do not cover it. (is there a word for that area?)

Seems like in theory it would give me even more room for my hand

Same problem with these it leaves that area exposed right on top of the grip where as the Hogues covers it about another inch.

It's all about how big your hands are. The Pachmyr compacs might not allow your fingers to hang over.

I have 4 grips. laminated wood boot grips, factory rubber boot grips, hogue tamers and the pachmyr compacs. The Hogues feel the best to me and are plenty conealable. Although I did just change to the rubber boot grips to give them a try.

Part of what you don't see in the pics is that the pachmyr compacs are wider than the Hogue tamers at the bottom and make them a bit harder to conceal. But still very doable with the right clothes. Most people go to boot grips if they want to pocket carry. I carry AIWB but the boot grips are really handy for summer. Yes, your fingers will probably most definitely hang over on boot grips. But if you're not an overly big guy, the tamer or compacs would work. If you are really big, you may have to go with those other Pachmyrs someone posted. That should fill your hand.

But it is one of those things that you have to do like the rest of us and just try them. I know, I'd rather know what I'm getting into before spending 2 pennys but the at least the hogue and pachs aren't overly expensive.

I will say this, I prefer rubber grips because anything else just has a tenancy to slip with such a light gun, under recoil.

And the hardest to conceal but feel very good (I don't think you'll really miss the extra rubber covering the very top of the backstrap, in theory you try to grip as high as possible on a gun, but it's not a necessity to get right up to the very top of the frame) And the reason they are like that is the models with a hammer go down that far, you might already know that:

All 642s are round butts, and the Pachmayr Decelerators are the largest, cushiest grips that I know of for round butt J frames. They are also made to fit K frames (different grip numbers, of course) and the K models are just about the same size as those for J frames.

So, compared to most of the grips people put on the (relatively) small J frame belly guns, the Decelerators make the gun LARGE. But when I have to shoot a lot of rounds out of a 38 J frame, especially an alloy frame model, Decelerators are the grips I put on the gun.

Pach"s can't be beat.

These Hogue grips are absolutely perfect!!! Much smaller than I thought they would be but yet fits my hand absolutely perfect without any extra length or girth to make it overkill and still easily concealable.

The secret is what I was speaking of earlier is that this grip comes up high and covers a good portion of the flat area before it starts to slope so that your hand can rise a little higher thus giving you a full grip without making it longer than necessary

ABPOS, The second pic of your four pics it looks like you have the identical grips that I have, is that a 38 airweight? If so I'm wondering why your grips completely cover that flat area where as I have the same grip and gun and it only covers about a little over half to 3/4?

And how are you guys getting a full pic to show up I can only do the thumbnail once I download it?

Now to the original question, IMO (there's that word again), Hogue's Centennial Tamer, is the best ergonomic option, for obtaining a big gun grip - on a small, round butt j frame S&W. It's shown on a polymer "Bodyguard" model, but fits a RB/J just fine.

Got one on my M640-1, & pretty much relegates the piece to belt carry only. Almost too big for the primary purpose of a classic pocket pistol, but still conceals well - w/ a quality holster, VERY comfortable to fire.

Uh oh, what did I do? What'd I miss? I didn't see that thread.....

Only reason I do that is without a little bit of extra girth, my right thumb sometimes gets in the way of my trigger finger. I need a bit more room to lock it down and out of the way. I'm thinking about getting a bike inner tube and putting it over those rubber bands.

No, I've never used red ones. I have used blue ones that you get from buying asparagus though. Those would look better but I don't have any right now.......

If you have the hogue tamers made for centennial model or bodyguard, they should go all the way up. They may make them for standard frames with a hammer. But I've not seen that. It's possible they do and you bought that particular model. It would make sense if they did make a set for a j frame with a hammer. I guess when I ordered them it might have specifically said 442/642 model. Lets see.....

I can't find them on brownells..... ugh.
