I just picked up my new no lock 340PD (paid through the nose) and plan to function test it tomorrow @ my local in-door range. I've been carrying my no lock 340M&P for several years now and tried to keep it looking good in spite of lots of range time (like shooting my EDC). This forum helped w/suggestions on cleaning agents to protect the Ti cylinder but wanted to ask if there are any other helpful hints for keeping it looking good long term (I've been carrying and shooting Js since '68) or anything else I might need to know about this model. My carry load will be the Speer GD 135 grain +P. Thanks in advance . . . . .

Hey, Old Cop...I carry mine every day in a pocket holster. This probably sounds nit picky, but I have a parts brush that I use everyday. I mostly wear jeans, and cotton jeans generate a lot of lint. I suppose that this really does no harm, but every day I take just a minute to dust off the lint, and run a dry patch through the bore and chambers to keep it lint free.

As far as cleaning after range time, we covered that pretty thoroughly in the other thread. I have quite a few of the centennial style guns, (all "No Lock"), and one of their strengths is that the action is closed to routine dirt and lint. On a gun that I carry every day, I would take it down about once a year and scrub the internals with whatever you are using for routine cleaning and lightly relubricate the internals. Most lubes will coagulate or thicken with the passage of time, and tend to "gunk up the works".

Also, I occasionally dust out the holster itself, to help minimize the dust problem. Good choice of ammo, but if you can find it, the .357 magnum version has just a little more velocity with the same bullet weight and structure, and does not recoils appreciably harder. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find it for some time, although the last time it was available I stocked up, and still have a good bit. I also stocked up on the .38 +P version that you named, as this is a little easier to obtain, but still not plentiful.

I would post some pictures, but have not recovered from the PhotoBucket debacle yet.

Edit: Hey!! I remembered how to attach a photo using the forum tools!!

From the top down, my 340 PD, M&P 340, 640-1 Pro Series, and 640-1 (all "No Lock" versions):

I wipe off every gun after handling or carrying as soon as I get home with a silicone cloth. At the range when finished shooting I take a damp paper towel with me to wipe off the carbon on the outside of the gun before reholstering or putting it in the case. Keeps the carbon out of the leather & case.

Thanks for the suggestion about the silicone cloth, I do the same thing. In fact I keep one in my range bag and several others placed where I can easily grab one as needed.

I use the silicon cloths as well, but usually don't with guns like the 340 PD, as its scandium, titanium and stainless steel construction seem to be impervious to the enemies of blued carbon steel: moisture, especially perspiration, with its combination of salts, acids, and moisture, and other chemicals. I am fairly religious about protecting the blued guns, either with a silicon cloth or a coating of Renaissance wax for long term storage, but I have not had any corrosion problems with either the M&P 340 or the 340 PD. I usually leave them dry, as a wipe down with silicon seems to attract more lint, and is unnecessary to prevent corrosion or rust. YMMV. JMHO. !!!!

I carry the 340 M&P a lot, but usually OWB. When I carry IWB or in a pocket, I try to be mindful of dirt, dust and lint, not to mention sweat in our 100+ degree Central San Joaquin Valley summers.. I tend to wipe them down with a oily cleaning cloth just about daily, but especially in the summer.
