Hell-o! I have a Model 57, 41 Magnum, blued, with pinned barrel 8 3/8" length. Serial # N8074 6X. All original. Anyone know when it was made? Came with wood case and a nice leather shoulder holster. Thanks.

Probably 1980, possibly early ‘81. SCSW4 is a little vague near the end of N prefix N frame production. According to it, N800000 range runs 1980 to 1983 and overlaps some with N900000 range. Probably some guys here with lettered guns near your serial that have a better fix on it.

Take a look at the front sight base and blade... Is it all milled in one piece or is the blade pinned to the base?

I had two 1980 vintage 57s with 4" barrels one made in the early 1980 and one late 1980. The later one had the front sight blade milled as part of the base which was also part of the barrel. This was a cost cutting move by some unthinking bean counter as when the front sight was damaged the whole barrel would have to be replaced or the damaged blade milled off and a new front sight fitted vs. just having to replace the blade.

Smith later went back to pinning front sight blades to the base milled to the barrel...I am not sure when this happened however...

my N929xxx and N957xxx were both shipped 1982. I'd say your 1981.

I also found that low volume sellers at the time such as model 57s have earlier stamped frames than the ship date suggests.

My 6' 1982 model 57 is one of my all time favorites...enjoy.

The front sight is the milled one. So I guess late 1980/81. No damage though, so good for now. Love the pistol.
Thanks!
