Where to get S&W Factory Rubber Grips?

S&W factory rubber grips (with S&W logo) are very good. The boot grip used on many J frames is probably the equal of the renowned "Uncle Mike's" rubber boot grips that everyone used to try to find (but which have been off the market for a number of years). Photo #1.

The factory rubber grips that appear on some new K/L frames (Mdl 66 and some versions of the Mdl 686) are superb. Photo #2.

The three finger factory rubber grips found on some new .357 Magnum J frames are great, too. They cost $27.75 from the S&W web store. Photo #3.

(These three styles of rubber grips are not to be confused with Hogue rubber grips, which S&W offers on some revolvers from the factory and in their web store, and which are excellent in their own right).

These grips are not expensive but are well-made and are an obvious solution for many people who want a good rubber grip that is not overly large.

The question is: where to get these factory rubber grips? S&W lists the rubber boot grips on their web store, but not the other two models. Any ideas on stock numbers, and where to get them?

Thanks.

Good Questions! The last new S&W I bought was 20 years ago. It turned out to be the most carried gun I ever had, a Md 649-3. Should it be lost or stolen I would have to replace it. I think the grips are the same as in your picture 3. I should buy a back-up set as I love them! I love wood, but these grips are just perfect for how I carry and use this gun.

Sir.
I find rubber grips in discount boxes at gun shops and gun shows. There are a lot of them that are discarded because folks don't like the looks of them. They are great for real use, but just don't have that appeal.

A good idea, but I tried this at our local shows and came up empty. I wound up buying a dozen # 1 which were UM grips at that time from the "Remainder" section of the S&W website Store. Not for sale... $15 each IIRC, while the Smith knockoffs were $25-26. One vendor had one each #1 and 3 on our For Sale forum for $50 each recently!

S&W grips

Great informative thread. After several years of searching for a grip that will allow me to still enjoy shooting my 642 with my arthritic wrists ( I could no longer handle the boot grip), I installed the "3 finger" J frame grip and it made a huge difference. Thanks for the info; others have asked where to purchase the "3 finger" J grip:):)

Aye - the 3-finger grips are as scarce as hen's teeth! I haven't found anything that fits my hand better. The current boot grip style - #1 in the original post - are less than worthless to me. It's irritating that S&W decided to stop selling the 3-finger grip ...

My 649-3 came new with the 3 finger grips that are almost the same as the OP's picture 3. The only difference that I can see is that they do not have the S&W logo. Logo or not, I'm pretty sure they are Uncle Mike's. So if you can live without the logo, look for Uncle Mike's, they may be a bit easier to find.

S&W Factory Rubber Grips

Very interesting and informative Topic.
Thank you very much for the pictures.

You have brought up questions that I
have wondered about the Factory Grips.

I like the older Houge Rubber Grips, but
wanted to try the New ones.

When I got my S&W 625-6 45Colt it came
with the S&W Wood Combat Grips. I
quit shooting after the first 6 rounds. The
Combats were brutal to the hand. Worthless
for shooting any lengthy shooting session.
They will be never used again.

I quickly replaced the Combats with a
Factory S&W Medallion Rubber Set. I lucked
out finding these, and paid $25.

I shoot a lot so Wood is not an option.

The Delta Ergo grip might be even better for you. Ugly but it ends there.

I noticed that I particularly liked the new factory rubber grips that S&W was using when I bought my 4" and 3" 686+s.

So, I am certain that in two seconds I can find these two sets of rubber grips:

The gun is gone so I know I have these lying around and I might have an original set of J-frame rubber stocks around as well because I took them off my M642 - unless those boot grips came off the 642 - I am uncertain.

In case someone needs such things. ;)

Thanks for comments and suggestions. I think these are very good grips, too. Just hard to find in the aftermarket.

Am sending a letter to the S&W store today, asking if #2 and #3 can be purchased directly from S&W. Will post the results, if they respond.

I replaced the rubber grips on my 629-6 with rubber grips made for the X Frame from Houge (I believe Houge made the grips for the 629 as well.) The X fram grips fit my hand better, and seem to soak up more of the recoil. You may want to look at the website to determine if they have any products that suit you.

I use the new grips on both my carry guns; Model 637, and when carrying heavy, a Model 66. These are the most comfortable and natural pointing grips I have.

"...carrying heavy..." What a great expression! Mind if I borrow/adopt it? Good shooting!

I've never had a problem with the S&W stock rubber grips either, other than for j frames they don't allow the use of speed loaders without modifications. They fit my hand ok and I shoot well with them.

That being said, I've found that I absolutely love the old Uncle Mike's stocks that S&W used to put on their revolvers. Particularly the two fingered boot grips. They just fit my hand very well. I would put them on all my j frames if I had enough of them.

It's been mentioned above, but just call S&W. They can look up & sell stuff that's not on the website. I know because I have done it several times. Let us know what you buy.

Well in these parts it would be Carrin' Heavy! Lol. Got to love the rubber grips, all our j frames have them, both carry 66s also wear rubber.

I normally don't repro photos when quoting other posts, but man, that is some serious iron! Reminds me of the fellow I met at our range back in 1972. He worked for a landlord and collected cash rents in rough areas. He had a CCW and carried 2 nickel revolvers: a snub Python and a 3.5" Model 27. Thing was, NYC was so bad back then that nobody thought he was overdoing it or showing off with these 2 large guns...

The original post showed three styles of S&W factory rubber grips (e.g., types that are not Pachmayr's or Hogue's).

There is also a fourth style of factory rubber grips -- #4 in this collection. These carry part number 1684980. Like #2, these are for K/L frames, and are similar but have a somewhat more rounded butt.

Still looking for a source to purchase these... except for #1, they are not for sale from the S&W web store.
