686 Plus 2.5": First Range Report
Finally got to the range this morning to take this baby for a spin. Balance and feel in the hand are superb. I like a boot grip and these Altamont's really fit the bill. Note: Check out the targets upper right for distance/caliber/bullet weight, etc.
First target is .38 spl.
Second target, again .38 spl.
Yes I do tend to shoot to the left in darker conditions but that can be fixed with better grip, etc.
Third target: .357 Magnum. This is my first L Frame S&W and I was extremely pleased with how much the heavier frame soaks up recoil. Interestingly, if you compare the .38 spl and .357 Magnum targets you may notice that the .357 Magnum makes slightly bigger holes. The suggestion here is that these rounds, made for short-barreled guns, begin expansion soon after leaving the barrel!
After shooting and then again after cleaning -

Glad you’re enjoying the 686. I have one identical and it’s a blast to shoot. BTW, I like the looks of the dirty gun better. It gives it the “being used for what it’s designed for look”.

Fine revolver! Also ... fine shooting. The short barreled stuff is just more difficult to get good hits with firing anything more than light target loads. Sincerely. bruce.

Dirty pics are good! Were you shooting sa or da? I'm assuming standing. Both hands or off hand? That first target looks great!!

That is what I was thinking too! Nice looking 686! I was out shooting my 686s a few days ago - one of them a 686+ 2.5" , the other a 6". I may have to load up some of those 135s for my next range trip.

nice shooting the first time out !! that first target at 50 feet is out standing for shooting the first time .. I think you'll tighten those groups up a bit after get more use to the 686 ..
hope mine is that good right out of the box .. its shipped to my FFL but we got 6 to 7 inches of snow yesterday so it will probably be delayed ..
How was the recoil shooting the 357's out of the short
2 1/2 inch barrel ??

Doc did you lube the 686 before shooting it ?? or do you need to lube a wheel gun .. this being my first ..

No Sir - I have never done that in contrast to an auto that I might break down and wipe off prior to shooting. Every revolver I ever bought new came just the way it should. Besides, the wetter it is for any reason the more powder and gunk collects and makes cleaning (and maybe operation) a bit different.
After I clean, I might use exactly one small drop of oil on the locking piece on the frame that fits into that little rectangular slot on the cylinder (obviously you can see I don't know the proper name). I never oil the barrel unless I'm leaving the gun in the safe for months. Other than that, once in a blue moon I might wipe the whole thing down with a Remington oil wipe and then take most of it off. Never over oil!

I also really like my 686-4+. I only shot one cylinder full, but it put em where I wanted em to go.

Shooting the 686 was an after thought - it was my CC du jour and I was only carrying the ammo that was in it and 1 speedloader. I was actually at the range to play with my Gen 5 G26 the wife got me (in exchange for my G43), one of my M4s that I converted to .22lr.
and my DW 10mm Razorback.

Good shooting with a fine weapon. I almost had to beat my son the day in Louisville, Ky when I found my perfect 686P. Had to explain to him how to gun deal. We came back at closing time and price came down $150.
Love the gun and is my shooter. Your group, good probably a grip issue. That's the reason I shoot revolver only. Auto I hit low always. Easier to shoot revolver than relearn with a black auto.
