Thinking of installing the extended cylinder release on my 686+ PC .. I have found 2 makers Hogue which comes in 2 sizes and one made by TK Custom ..

The TK Custom one looks to be a little smoother in surface texture of the piece .. it has more shine then the Hogue ..

Any one install one yet ??

TK Customs is $ 69.95 while the Hogue piece is 20 bucks more .. The Hogue release doesn't seem as polished as the one by TK least from the pictures I've seen on the internet !!

If you have installed one how have you liked it verses the original S&W design ..

I installed the shorter Hogue version on my 325 TR. I bought the extended release via Amazon. It works great!

Have 3 of the short Hogues on 3 of my newer N frames and am very happy with them.

I recently got a 686+PC 5" that came with an extended cylinder latch . It works great! It makes the flat latch feel like your in the stone age or something. It eliminates that feeling of trying to bury your latch into your sideplate just to get the cylinder open. Honestly, I dont know why they didn't come extended already! (Maybe holsters and CC might have something to do with it. )
I've been comparing the latch that I got and zoggers above and it appears that the PC one is higher and longer. While his looks closer to the keyhole than mine does. I'm sure both have that angle that is critically needed .
I called Smith and wesson customer service and option #4 for the performance center to see if I could order more of those cylinder releases this morning- and got a big fat NO ! NOT for sale.
So I think so far, those hogue ones and the TK would probably be our best bet. And I think Amazon had them the cheapest when I did a quick search(at the time).

I don't like the extended release that extends beyond the frame. I have to really change my grip to access that type of release. I opted for one from California Competition Works that simply gives you a flat, checkered surface to push against.

I like the looks of this one but I can’t find one, everyone’s out of stock. I’m gonna try to get ahold of them Tuesday and see if they still make them.

Never saw any real need for them. An answer for a non-existent problem?

I like them consider the California style. A little smaller and shorter than Hogue and doesn't take up much more space

I just went looking and I can't even find the CCW one anywhere. However, I did find a very similar release at Revolver Supply. Maybe you'd like to try that one. Here's a link...

I purchased a hogue extended cylinder release from Amazon. The short one. It was $76.
The short one looks shorter than the ones the PC guns use. So I think if you wanted an 'almost' direct replacement, the longer one, which I'm going to order in a bit, will probably 'almost' be similar.
I'll keep the short one on the Pro gun for a while. At least it does feel better than the original cylinder release.

I installed one on my PC 986 2.5". Then I sold the gun.

I only have one revolver set up with an extended cylinder release. It is my 625 pin gun
I must have put this Hogue cylinder release on the revolver 20+ years ago

I have one on my M-66 from the now-defunct California Competition Works.

My hands curl up at night or when I'm not using them because of the work that I had. Worse when cold. Sometimes I'll sit on em or find someplace to stash them just to straighten em out. I have bad joints too. I used to be a Welder. Not anymore.
That's why I called smith and Wesson after I found I liked their cylinder releases on the new vented PC guns. I was trying to buy a few until they gave me a big fat "NO!".
My thumb doesn't hurt too much with those latches.
Only trying to find something that wont strain my thumb too much.
Just trying to feel comfortable.

You can buy them aftermarket. Hogue makes some, and possibly/probably others. Years of operating air powered grinders have left their mark on me. Not constant, but it's getting worse as I age.

I got the "hogue extended cylinder release-short version ". It was ok. I liked the PC version better.
The "teeth" on the Hogue version are sharp. But I want to try the long- extended release, next.

FWIW, I'm a Lefty strong side (shooter) LEFT, Cylinder release LEFT thumb, open cylinder and hold open gun in RIGHT hand, access Speed loaders in LEFT, dump LEFT hand bump on extractor and load with LEFT with speed loader.

I am tired of straining with my LEFT thumb to get adequate cylinder release on my new-to-me 686. My original 686 is smooth as silk, my new-to-me 686 not-as-much. Just got it back from S&W for THAT fix (and it is better, though NOT nearly as smooth as my OEM 686 I bought new back in 1986 and still have).

I want and wanted this other 686 no- dash as a shooter platform for reloading. Have NOT even fired this one since I am still dealing with Seller & GB about having to send the S&W 686 to the Mother Ship for repairs.

QUESTION:
I have already determined that I want a short(er) extended cylinder release for this lefty's gun, but just a bit torn between Hogue and TK. I'm NOT into speed loading, though I am tired of fighting with my lefty reloading technique per say. FWIW, if I have to, I will grind-to-fit if needed. Best recommendations anyone?

I think the hogue or the TK should be fine. I'm going to get an extended long just to have, in the hogue. I have plenty to use them on.
It wouldn't trouble me to get the long as I primarily shoot DA only. I imagine the long might get in the way doing SA shots. Something else to consider...

I just ordered the "short" Hogue version. I have at least four revolvers that I can use it on, so I am sure it will worth experimenting with it...

Ha! And I just ordered the long version from midway usa. I had a $40 gift certificate that I received for an optic, so it's only costing me 40. They say I'll get it on Monday. Well see how it goes...

Just got my "Short" Hogue Extended Release today for new-to-me No Dash 686! It fits very well IMO, even in my old Safariland #530 Klipspringer holster with a thumb break...

Actually found out that I don't really need it, after doing my own trigger job and stoning the cylinder release bar. I put it on anyway...
