Rear sight adjustment, model 29-10
Hi everyone first time on this site. I just bought a new 29 44 mag. had it out yesterday. It seems to shoot low, I mean low about 2' at 20 yards. So rear sight need to come up. The screw for elevation turns very hard. I can't get it to move. I'm afraid that the screw driver might slip mashing the screw or god for bid put a long gash in the frame. Is there something I'm missing? Is there something I should do before trying the screw? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Neil

Try a shot of something that penetrates, like WD40, and let it sit a bit.
Good for you not forcing it; that way lies sadness.

Make sure you use a correctly sized hollow ground screwdriver.

You can also push down on the sight to take some tension off while using the screwdriver. Remember, adjust the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go...

Maybe a drop of liquid wrench then let it soak in overnight. Liquid wrench is very penetrating and it also attacks rust. Follow up with a well fitting hollow ground screwdriver.

Counter-clockwise should raise the rear sight.
If it's still very tight after trying some lube you might try removing the rear sight. You only need to remove the front screw & slide it off to the rear.
Check the lower elevation nut & make sure it turns freely. If not it may be cross-threaded or just defective. In that case contact S&W for repair.

If it's just a matter of being stuck, Kroil penetrating oil works wonders on stuck/rusted screws/nuts/bolts...

Hi guys and gals. Good news! The oil trick worked. Let it set over night and it turned nicely. Being this is a new gun, I think it could just have been an over zealous factory work putting extra mussel behind it. It works great now!
Thank for all the help. I'm sure l'll need more at a later date.

Can the rear adjustment even accommodate "2' at 20 yards"? Hope you meant 2" at 20 yards.

Hi DocGlock, I'll take 60% the blame. New gun first time shooting it. A lot of me no doubt. I need lots of range time with it.
Thanks greenmachine! I will use the site often.
Again thanks to all.
