Refinish a New Gun?
I was looking at some guns today that I hadn't handled for awhile; one of which was a nickel 4 inch 34-1 made in 1983, the last year of production according to the 4th Edition of the S&W Standard Catalogue. Noticed numbers under the barrel and thought that was odd, and a star too. So pulled the stocks and found a R N stamp along with the usual N for original nickel finish on the left grip frame and on the cylinder. Also a date stamp suggesting work by the factory in June of 1983. So, why would a gun likely built in mid-1983 have re-finish stamps as well as indication of a barrel replacement? Maybe the factory was building 2 inch guns and got an order for a 4 inch and had to re-work an existing gun? Doesn't seem likely but are there other explanations? Not a big deal, just curious.
