I’ve searched the Internet thoroughly for police Smith and Wesson revolver trade-ins and they have seem to have dried up. Anybody know a current source? Thanks!

Got a time machine?? The best time to look for a goodly selection of police trade-ins is about 15-20 years ago (at least.) Set the dial for about 1995 if you really want to be certain of having the most to choose from. ;)

Now that I've ribbed you enough, I would seriously suggest AIM as mentioned previously, and Bud's who had a few recently. You might also check with J&G Sales. No matter who you choose, be ready for a bit of sticker shock. The cheap, abundant used revolvers of yore are long gone! :( Stuff I would be able to pick through in 1995 and have my choice for $250 will cost you 3 times that or more now.

If I had my time machine working, I'd go back to '95 with a pocket full of cash and buy all the guns and gold I could lay my hands on. Unfortunately I was using my money back then keeping a roof over my head, gas in the car, and paying my other bills. More's the pity!

Cal DOC just recently switched to Glock and placed a LOT of model 64s into the market place. Trouble is, I don't know who they wholesaled them to. Pretty much all 4" SB duty holster guns. Mostly range guns so they got shot a lot more than a street cop's issue gun would have.

Some of us just grabbed up a small batch of 64's with 3" barrels from center-fire systems. Some with locks some without. The 3" were in two batches that I believe are all gone (they were down to 9 when I got mine last week) but I think they had 4" for sale as well.

As noted , the Golden Age of LE Trade In Revolvers has come and gone . Most US LE agencies switched away by the mid '90s . What's out there now are from Corections depts and Security Agencies . As alluded to above , these organizations usually don't permently issue to specific persons , but will have "duty" guns that are hot seat rotated to be in holsters 24hr, but rarely shot , and dedicated "Range Guns " used exclusively for Training and re-Quals. These will have zillions of rounds thru them . Little exposure to the elements , but still finish wear from 10s of thousands of draws from the holster.

I have seen personally the practice that when "Range" guns are getting near the end of the life span ( aka in need of complete rebuild ) , they will get regulated back to "Duty" use, and replaced with a batch of carried much/ shot little "Duty" guns.

Meanwhile if you are looking for screaming bargins , now is the time to grab up LE trade in .40s&w of the various makes and models . Many LE Agencies are jumping on the latest fad, and re-switching to 9mm , and likewise the civilian market for .40 is soft .

Yep, the age of plentiful and cheap LEO trade in revolvers is long gone. The age of plentiful and cheap LEO trade in metal frame S&W pistols is also finished. We will be seeing a spurt of LEO trade in pistols in 40 S&W for a while, likely a mix of pistol brands, but for the revolvers, that was a long time ago.

I can find semi-automatic trade ins, but not revolvers. I do not think that I have seen a police trade in revolver for sale for a long time. Most of HPD - even the ones who seldom shoot - took the option of buying their trusty 357s when they were issued semi-automatics.

J and G Sales has used model 10s and 64s. I have bought used revolvers from them in the past and have been happy with the quality and price.

AIM Surplus right now has S&W 64 PD trade-in's for $399.95.
$250.00 in 1995 is now $419.56 so it is cheaper to buy used guns today for $399.95 than in 1995.
And Custom Armament have S&W 4006 TSW CHP trade-in's also at $399.00 with intergral rail & 3 mags.

GT Distributors has recently had a new batch of tradein revolvers. They are good about putting a few on that auction site at a time and a few on the shelves of each store.

Except I was buying Model 66 ND, -1s and -2s and getting to pick from a table full... lowly Model 64s were less. You’re right to add inflation though. Maybe I should have just bought a bunch of sub $600/oz gold or $3/oz silver. The point of my rant was the same as others have said, those abundant ex-LEO revolvers are long gone.

If I had known even 6-8 years ago how the value of a pedestrian ex LEO Model 66 ND would skyrocket, I’m not sure the one I used, worn and non-original though it was, for Project 616 would have been sacrificed... yes it would have, because I really wanted that 327 FM K-frame. A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do!

I got mine about a month ago on Gunbroker. Payed $325.00 for it. There are deals out there. Just have to search for them.

Some years back I saw the decline in availability of surplused duty S&W revolvers and decided to act....even then the real deals were going away.
I got a M65 4", origin unknown, but the usual 'carried a lot, shot a little' indicators.
Around the same time, picked up a M65 3".
And - I'll take a M65 any day over a M64. Just more choices in ammo.

A bunch of us here (about 2 years back) on SWF jumped on some M640's being sold through Centerfire - believe they were from Michigan State Police.

But it seems the real deals are about gone.
Sorry - just can't ever see shelling out $400 for a M64 of any kind - my mind registers that as a ~$250 used gun - but ya'll enjoy.

Old Corp and Biggfoot44, I neglected to mention that back in the early to mid-1980s I was buying ex-LEO Model 64s for about $125-135 apiece just to use for trading stock. I didn't want to get all weepy with nostalgia! :( They were so omnipresent back then that they really didn't rate remembering. My, how things have changed!

Rough Looking ones could dip to $100 . Average .38s indeed $125 ish . $150 would get really nice .38 , low end for .357 . M15 were maybe $10 premium over M10 .

But all that has gone the way of $20 Mosins, $50 Mauser M98 , and $70 SKS .

If I still purchased non C&R Eligible pistols , I'd be stacking deep a variety of LE trade .40s now .

Go back far enough and there was an excellent gun show at Tupperware headquarters just south of Orlando. A guy used to carry in Model 10's on a loop of tie wire. $99 take your pick, many as you want. Joe

I think those may have been from Dallas ISD or DART officers. They did away with the last of the .38s a couple of years ago. That was how I got a lot of Ranger .38sp +P JHP for pennies - they also dumped all the ammo in the warehouse. That was the ammo I was issued once upon a time, and why I'm considering a give-away once my next chemo mess settles.
