Police trade ins?

Trying not to go O/T too much - but still LE surplus related...

There was a steadily-growing LE supply business in the city where I spent my LE career. It grew from a very small storefront to a large business supplying and getting equipment contracts for many agencies all over the state.
Consequently there was a time where they often had a stock of traded-in revolvers, shotguns and even carbines/rifles. Many were at quite cheap prices.
Recall a rack on the floor full of used PD trade-in Mossberg M500 12 ga. riot guns, $100 each. I bought one, and with a barrel change made a great turkey gun out of it.

Same rack later on had a number of used Ruger Mini-14's (don't recall origin) for about $200-$225 IIRC.

Also recall them having a used S&W M58 in the glass case. It stayed there on sale for almost two years at $280. Clerk said no one wanted it because of ammo cost and availability. Remember considering it, but shoot, already had a Ruger BH in .41, so why bother?

The business owner wanted to retire a few years back and sold the business. Current ownership is under the business that owns/runs Safariland. They made the decision to only sell to LE personnel, which angered many that shopped there for deals over the years.

I think those may have been from Dallas ISD or DART officers. They did away with the last of the .38s a couple of years ago. That was how I got a lot of Ranger .38sp +P JHP for pennies - they also dumped all the ammo in the warehouse. That was the ammo I was issued once upon a time, and why I'm considering a give-away once my next chemo mess settles.

Sure wish I had bought CASES instead of BOXES. That was a great price for some great ammo.

Yeah, they had several pallets of it, and it had gotten down from $16.99 to $14.99 / 50 when I bought the last 3 boxes they had one day. They claimed there was more in the system, but I've not seen it since.
They did have some case lots of Remington Golden Saber in .38sp +P at $150/500 the end of last year. Grabbed one of those as well. But chemo is soaking up my money and limiting my ability to shoot what I have.

I did pick up a case of that Golden Saber. It's a lot more snappy than the Ranger.

Sorry to hear about the chemo. BTDT

Cal DOC just recently switched to Glock and placed a LOT of model 64s into the market place. Trouble is, I don't know who they wholesaled them to. Pretty much all 4" SB duty holster guns. Mostly range guns so they got shot a lot more than a street cop's issue gun would have.

That might be where Aim Surplus got their stock from. The
ads said "overseas police returns", but mine (and at least one
other poster) bears no import marking. Mine was shot quite
a bit, judging by flame cut on topstrap.

I emailed Aim, and asked for info on origin. Got a "no information
is available" response.

It is hard to find the older Colt and S&W revolvers. Most PD's switched to pistols years ago and the supply of these older guns has just about dried up. If you do find one of these guns in really good condition, the prices are quite steep, even for the clunkers. I could be wrong, but I believe the on line sales are helping to drive the prices up. As we old guys start dying, our guns will be available, but the younger generation seem to be into all the new plastic and/or tactical guns.

I picked up mine the end of Jan of this year. Someone here on the forum mentioned a South Carolina dealer was moving some DC DOC weapons. Found it on gunbroker. Paid $345 for the whole shebang - Model 10-10.

Still haven't fired it yet.

Then (in the same month) I picked up a Model 65-8 LE trade in. Also from Gunbroker.

Paid $375 for it. Need to shoot it as well. So many to shoot, so little time.

I have been fortunate to score a number of them over the years. Primarily they have been Model 10-5's and one Model 10-6. Then the one in the picture is the last one I acquired in March of 2017. It is a Model 10 no dash and cost me significantly at $408.00. It is the only one I have marked with LE markings.

Although, I have several Sig Sauer P226's and a P229 pistols that were LE trade-ins.

Got the same set up at AIM for $299

That looks to be a New York DC(dept of corrections) 10-10 like I bought last year from a LGS in Ct. It's the same package for the about the same price($339). My holster was labeled FCS(Fishkill correctional facility). I saw other NY DC M10s on Gunbroker at the time. I bought two, 10-14 and 10-10 both round butts. They're well worn great shooters and very accurate.

I recently saw a number of Model 64s for sale at a local Cabelas. All had the spurs trimmed off of the hammers, and all looked to be dirty and scratched. Of course, I don't believe anyone even glanced at them on their way to the modern semi-auto handguns display cases. A sales person asked if I wanted to look at the Model 64s and I passed - combination of not enough time, appearance of the revolvers, and the asking price being a bit ambitious.

I agree with what others have said, above regarding the prices of used K-frames - current price starts around $350.00 and heads North from there.

Good luck,

Dave

It is likely the era of domestic LE agency trade or turn/ins is over, but as noted above corrections, private security companies and re-imports are still out there. Leap quickly if you see something you like at a good price.

$250.00 in 1995 is now $419.56 so it is cheaper to buy used guns today for $399.95 than in 1995.

And Custom Armament have S&W 4006 TSW CHP trade-in's also at $399.00 with intergral rail & 3 mags.

Yeah but in 1995, the guns were 24 years younger. Some had scarcely been carried or even issued before the switch to auto loaders. Also you got to pick & choose from a shelf or even an 8’ table full, vs buying sight unseen.

But in 1995, the deals didn’t see all that great. That was the year my home state, Texas, passed CHL, so civilians were still mostly interested in target or hunting revolvers. And who then could have foreseen the lock?

Right now is a good time to take up the .40.

I suspect the move back to 9mm will be the last Great Migration for many, many years, and the glory days of seemingly dime-a-dozen LEO trade ins are behind us.

Oh man, that's a sweet round butt, fixed sights, 4". And a spurred hammer! That's a really cool configuration! Too bad it's got a lock :(

Picked this 65-5 up about three years ago from a local cop shop.
It was mixed in a bunch of VA DOC M64 trade ins and tagged as a M64 at $299. I showed the clerk the discrepancy and he stated that the tag and price were correct.
I nearly dislocated my shoulder reaching for my wallet...

Yep, I think we’re done with revolvers coming straight from domestic agencies. And what does trickle out will probably not be in real good shape.

As for all LEO handguns, once the migration back to 9mm is complete, I don’t think we’ll ever again see anything like the revolvers of the 90s, or the current masses of cheap .40s.
