I ran into a model60-4 at a lgs. Serial number ,
BNZ81xx. 38 special. Adjustable sights, square butt, full under lug.
In very good shape. Wearing black rubber grips.
Can someone help me with any information about it.
Thanks in advance.

It will be a round-butt frame. If you like trail guns and might use it as a carry gun, too, it should be right up your alley. It’s not as easy to shoot well as a K-frame but I’ve always been satisfied with mine. If it seems to interest you and the price isn’t crazy, buy it and give it a try. I don’t think you'll be disappointed. They’re great little guns. Price should be in the neighborhood of $500, plus or minus, depending on location and condition.

I have a 36-6 (carbon steel version) that I purchased new when they came out. It is a very accurate 3" for me out to about 25 yards with my 38 Special handloads. It would probably be the absolute last handgun I would give up! The only upgrade that I performed was replacing the spongy rubber Hogue Monogrip with a wooden Monogrip.

I have the .357 version without the "hole". It is a great gun and I will never sell mine. I only shoot .38s in mine. It makes an amazing trail gun.

Well, you pretty much described it. :)

If you get along well with .38 J frames it’s a nice gun, and if you care it was “+ P rated”. It was made from the late ‘80s to mid-‘90s and a similar model in .357 (the 60-15) is still made. Good luck in your decision.

If you can get a nice one for around $500 it’s worth it all day long

... or even $100 more. I would expect to pay $750 or more for a LNIB example.

I first encountered the 60-4 that was/is owned by my friend, Dale53. I was so impressed he couldn't leave it laying around... it would have tried to follow me home!! Finally, to help me out he found one for sale, NIB (but missing the tools) and I got it at a "friends and family" price. I don't generally like to make "last gun I would get rid of" pronouncements, but if I did, this would be quite near the top of such a list. I did change out the grips for a set of ebony combats to make it truly my own.

I bought my Model 60-4 (BNB4086) brand new on June 13, 1992. It shipped from the factory on March 24, 1992. The stocks shown in the photos were purchased at a gun show shortly after I bought the gun and then modified to work with the Safariland Speedloaders.

One of the things that I've always considered an anomaly when it comes to this gun, it's consistently more accurate with cast semi-wadcutters than it is with cast round-nose, where all my other .38 Specials are just the opposite.

Thanks for all of the replies. I paid 525 plus tax for it, and wasn’t sure if I overpaid. Seems like I was in the ballpark. It comes with a blue plastic box, cleaning kit and vPI? Paper. I had them remove the grips and had no rust or dirt under them. Still at lgs for a few days.

I paid $750 for mine and was glad to get it at that price. There are various theories about how many of the 60-4 and 36-6 were produced, but regardless of the numbers, they rarely come up for sale in this part of the world.

With a set of the round/square J frame target grips they look like miniature 686's and 586's.

Here’s a picture of mine along with my custom 327 FM (K-frame.). Since the barrel on the K-frame is a modified Model 617 barrel it has a full underlug too. They look pretty good together, huh?

Keep the photos coming, love what I see. KevinHee mine is probably close to yours. Thank you for including your number, made me realize I made a mistake this morning. OOPS

36-6, same gun in bead blast blue. The book says only 615 were made, but Roy tells me 2000. Regardless, seldom seen and hard to price. There are 3 on Gunbroker listed for $1100 to $1600. (Without any sales). I'm thinking about selling mine and trying to establish a fair price (to a friend), and thinking $850 to $950.
