Default 686 no dash with issues

I picked this one up this morning at a local pawn shop. It's got a serious case of push off and I'm assuming no one wanted to risk trying to fix it or shoot it because it would be really dangerous the way it is right now but for 300 bucks I'll give it a try. I'll be in the process of disassembly shortly.

Looks like a prize, considering what you paid for it.

Push off can be the result of damage to either the SA bevel on the trigger, or the SA cocking notch on the hammer.

If the hammer notch is in-tact and has not been tampered with, and there are no other issues with the internals, SA function can usually be restored by sharpening the trigger bevel back to the factory prescribed angle. This repair to restore the bevel on the trigger is not difficult, but requires the proper 6 x 1/2 x 1/2 medium Norton India stone, and the correct "bench top" procedure. If the cocking notch on the hammer is damaged, the hammer will have to be replaced. Use a magnifier to check the condition of these parts (the cocking notch and the bevel on the trigger)....damage and "alterations" are often very hard to see. The mainspring and/or the mainspring strain screw may also have been altered.

I would also suspect that the OEM rebound slide spring has been either cut or replaced with a lower poundage, aftermarket one. Replacing the altered rebound slide spring with a new, OEM spring may restore function without further intervention, if the trigger and hammer surfaces are undamaged.

Thanks, I'll take some close up shots of the internals when I get it opened up.

Got it opened up took a known to be good 586 hammer I had and put it in the 686 same push off so it's not the hammer.
Next I'll have a look at the rebound slide spring.

I think I've found the issue I have it completely down now, the rebound slide spring is the 17 coil OEM type shown in photo next to a new one.
The photo of the trigger is pretty much the give away, it appears to me that someone has seriously honed the trigger past the tolerance of holding.

If you are not familiar with the procedure and would like to try to resharpen the trigger bevel yourself, let me know. I can provide some illustrations and photos if necessary. With the correct stone, re-sharpening at the correct angle is not difficult.

The Kuhnhausen shop manual also contains some discussion of push off and it's causes.

I'd just buy a new trigger. Why bother trying to repair a common part and have no confidence in it. You only have 300 bucks invested. Good luck.

That is a really nice 686 with the adjustable front sight. My 586 8 3/8 is a tack driver. You are gonna love that pistol. I am with soda can. Slap the new part in and move on. Might look at the remaining parts while you have it torn down and replace any other worn parts. That gun will last awhile once that is done. Good luck and great score. Hogs and deer are in trouble !

You got a good deal, and with a new trigger which may set you back $50 or so, its a great deal. I'm betting that gun was used for Metallic Silhouette. Too bad the original iron sights weren't included.

Money well spent on a 686 Silhouette ! I've been looking for one to go with my 586 Silhouette , and finding one below $1000 is almost impossible . How about a range test ? I'm wondering how it does against a 6in , which is what mine is .

I was looking at triggers this morning but couldn't find a target, lots of standards out there for 20-40 bucks.
Your guess about the guns use is probably correct. I have a set of sights that I could install but I'm not sure I'll do that, the scope mount appears to have 4 screws holding it down and the forward screw seems to be way to large for a standard sight screw. I'm assuming the original was drilled out and re-tapped.

Range test only after I repair it....
The only reason I got it for that price was the pawn shop owner was afraid of it, as would most potential buyers.
I went in knowing it had problems.
