New to me Mod 640
Hello all,
I am new to the forum and Smith pistols. I just picked up this beauty a few days ago and not sure I want to fire it.
It is a MOD 640, 38 Special, Performance Center, Lew Horton. Product code 103795, SPC. Ord 3490, SN PCA01XX
From my limited research and knowledge there were only 150 of these made, is that true?
If so I think it will be a safe queen and something that my kids will get when I pass.

Can't tell you anything about your revolver. I have one very similar except for the front sight.

I can't comment with regards to the rarity or scarcity of this particular model but, if it were mine, I'd shoot the snot out of it!

Welcome! It's a nice gun and the Lew Horton variation is uncommon.
You are describing a common dilemma after a NIB/ANIB purchase. Without trying to sway you one way or another, here are some points to consider.
All S & W guns are test-fired at the factory, so none are literally "unfired". I coined the acronym "USP" for "unfired since purchase" but it seems to have not caught on. 
Did you pay full current value for it? That would be an argument to keep it unfired, and the opposite if not.
Are you just looking for the experience of firing a short-barrel .38 Special, and have you done that before with another gun?
Do you plan on carrying it? If so making sure it works is crucial.
Historically, a well-kept lightly used gun, especially a scarce one, doesn't lose a great deal of value (if any) from one that is NIB.

That's the ported model, called the "carry comp". It was also a standard production model with a different front sight. Any "unique" S&W if kept in unfired since factory will someday be worth more than comparable guns that have been carried or fired. I don't foresee it being a bid rare item.

I am not sure what full value for the pistol would be to me honest, but I don't believe I paid below its value. Do you happen to have an idea what it would be worth?
Are you just looking for the experience of firing a short-barrel .38 Special, and have you done that before with another gun?
I have fired short-barrel pistols before, but it has been many many years since I have. I think I will get some 38 dies once the current situation dies down and you can find things again and go shoot it.
Do you plan on carrying it? If so making sure it works is crucial.
I will not be carrying this pistol but agree that making sure it functions correctly is a must

Have shot and carried mine.
But it was used when I bought it.

Love those pachmayr grips. I have the 640 in 357 mag. I still have the original grips but would love to find a set of those pachmayrs

My 640-1 was the first handgun I ever bought.
I did put some nice Combat grips on it.
