627-0 Model of 1989 5.5" Barrel W/Combats..... Been looking Finally Found
I have been looking for a NIB example of the 627 5.5" for quite sometime. It shipped with Factory Combats and a Checkered Top Strap. I'm in Love, but just can't bring myself to Shoot it.
Thanks For Looking

Wow! I'm not generally the biggest fan of stainless steel but that thing is gorgeous! It's all so "roundy" reminding of a highly customized 1951 Mercury Lead Sled I saw this weekend. It was all "roundy" and gorgeous too.

Congratulations on a Great find
Looks like you have a -1 there.
Now you just need to find a second one that is in shooter grade

Thanks. It's a 627-0. I usually shoot mine, but this thing is the cleanest revolver I have ever owned. So, you are right I need a shooter.

I stand corrected
From those angles the pictures looked like a 101024 wearing a rear sight with the rounded front that was on the -1 and -2 D&T frames.
Looking at a picture of mine (now), I see the leaf is too long for the -1.

I like the case hardened Hammer and trigger. Is that a 627? Or a Dash 1. Very cool

My 101024 is the -1 engineering revision of the 627. -2 is the rarest 101024
No dash 101024s have visibly shorter stop notches
I could not resist shooting mine

Best DA of any N frame that I own. But mine's definitely in the "shooter grade" class. But being NIB hasn't stopped me from shooting other 1980-90s S&Ws. Only a 24-3 6" remains untested- so far!

A beautiful gun from my favorite S&W era. So many great revolvers made in that 1988 to 1998 time frame -- post Bangor Punta and pre lock. The boys and girls in Springfield were really hitting it out of the park.

I owned one of these when they first came out. One of those guns you wish you still had.

Jim,
Great looking gun. The non-fluted cylinders are starting to grow on me. Please show us a picture of the Checkered Top Strap.

Really nice. You can shoot it and clean it and it will look just as good as it does now! I really like the full underlug 627s, and that one is a beauty.

I got my 627-0 from a kitchen table FFL here on N. Calif who know it was going to be impossible to renew his license. He sold me several guns, a new 624-4" and this 627-0 for what he paid for them, $399 each (plus tax). Also got a Ruger #3 in 45/70, another rare gun. Not new like the others, but maybe 98%. He took it in trade from a guy who said he couldn't handle the recoil. $250 for this one. This was when gas was around a dollar.

Great gun. I had one and sold it. Still regret it. I used mine to hunt deer. Go ahead and shoot it. They clean up nicely. I believe mine had a 5" barrel. Also have the 629 of 1989.

Actually 6 shot 627s were produced with 5", 5 1/2" and 6" barrels.
It is the 101024 with it's 5,276 revolvers that is most commonly seen and talked about here in America. This is the revolver that is often mistakenly called the 627-0 even though it's production spanned 4 engineering revisions.
There was also product code 101030 and 101025 which ere 5" and 5 1/2" (respectively) Target Champion revolvers built for Europe
Product code 148327 was a small run of 5" parts gun. Probably using up the remaining Target Champion barrels.
Then you have a 6" that was done for Lew Horton, product code 149140.
With only 1/2" of barrel length separating all of these, at a glance it is easy to mistake one for another

Ok. I'm not sure what you mean by the 5276 627-0s being mistakenly called 627-0? All the ones I have seen are marked 627-0. All of these have the checkered top strap and 5 1/2 barrel. I have heard of a 627-1 that also has a checkered top strap, but I have never seen one.
In addition to the Target Champion listed above (I have only seen one of those), there were 5" 627-2 SKU 148218 and 6" 627-2 SKU 149193. Both 6 shot versions.
It is interesting to try to keep track of the 627 line as there have been different barrel lengths and styles, both 6 and 8 shot versions, both frame configurations from 1988 until today.
These 627-2 and later versions do not have the checkered rib.

I did not say that 5276 627-0s were being mistakenly called 627-0s. I said that all 5276 of product code 101024 are often mistakenly called 627-0s. -0 does not define a configuration, 101024 does
Those 5276 revolvers of product code 101024 span 4 different engineering revisions.
278 of product code 101024 are the original no dash revolvers. Production of the 101024 was halted when it was learned that the stop notches of the heavy unfluted cylinders were being prematurely peened. That is the only reason we know the count of that engineering revision since this is not information that S&W tracks.
Of the remaining 4998, the bulk of them are the -0 engineering revision. However there are -1s and -2s out there as well. The split count among the remaining engineering revisions is unknown.
My 101024 model 627 ictured below is a -1 engineering revision. The -1 revision introduced the frame already drilled and tapped for a scope.

Very interesting. I had never heard that the 5 1/2 101024, with checkered top strap could be found in -1 and -2 versions. Thanks for the clarification. Everything that I remember reading was all 5276 were -0 marked. Perhaps I just did not remember all the details.

Congrats on a great gun . I have one and have had a deposit since January with Jim Stroh at Alpha Precision to get some work done on it .
I'm going to have him go through the whole thing and work his magic on it .

I have a 627-2. It has the fluted cylinder and 5.5* bbl. The top-strap is not checkered. Beautiful piece and would love to find some nice combat stocks for it since I think the rubber Hogue take away from its beauty.
ETA: I just measured the bbl and it is 5". I don't know why I thought it was 5.5.

Glad this thread came around again since I missed it before. Beautiful gun OP - I have a -0 too and just learned a lot more about early 627’s.

The 627-0 club is a fine club to be a member.
It’s built like a tank! Shoot it!

Glad this thread came around again too.
A little off-topic, but was there ever a 4" conventional looking no lug/half lug barrel (preferably tapered) for the 8 shot models? Thanks

I owned a 627-0. Nice gun, but at 50 ounces it gets very heavy during long range sessions.
These guns shoot and balance better with round to square conversion stocks. I was offered a stupid amount of money for it and let it go.

"N" frames are the least represented in my collecting but I do like the balance of my 627-0. No box or combats when I found it. Priced toooo good to pass up.

Yes, a special run for Banger's Distributors in 2000, 100 each in 4" and 6.5". Someone here probably has one and may post a photo.

There have been 6 variations of 8 shot, carbon steel, Model 27s with traditional tapered barrels. All six are represented in this picture, all of these have the same serial number with a different prefix. Obviously the 4" one is in the lower right corner
Even though the 4" was advertised with a Baughman quick draw front sight, all of the ones I have seen shipped with the patridge front sight. At the time Smith & Wesson offered to change the sight at no cost. I decided to keep mine in it's as shipped configuration
With only 100 of the 4" Models produced, they do not often turn up on the secondary market. Those that do make it to the auction sites command high prices
I do not know how far back a GunBroker search goes, but a couple of these have passed through their system over the past many years.
If the 3 1/2" model appeals to you, there is a much greater chance of finding one. There are over 600 of the 3 1/2" Model 27s in existence. They were offered in blue and nickel. These were released in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
I am very fond of the 3 1/2" blue Model 27 and shoot that one very often
Best of luck on your Quest

Thanks for the replies guys. I have the 4" Bangor M27 (#24 of 100) but I was referring to a similar 4" for the 8 shot 627... even though I failed to mention it. To my knowledge, I dont recall seeing a factory one. Thanks again.

To date the only two 4" offerings of the 8 shot Model 627 were the 4" heavy barrel production revolver and the 4" tapered barrel PRO series revolver

Thanks for the info. I believe those are the only ones I can think of. Arent they slab-sided with tapered lug? Basically what I want is a 4" M27-7 barrel only in SS.

No, the production 627 was a heavy barrel.
The Pro series 627 was the tapered underlug
What you want has not yet been built by Smith & Wesson

Yes, the pro came in both 4 & 5", IIRC.
I was pretty certain it hasn't been made as dont recall seeing or reading about one but thought I'd ask. Thanks for the info and sorry for thread drift.

Congratulations, you got yourself a great gun. I saw my first 627-0 at a local gun shop, in 2015, and had to have it. As luck would have it, the same gun shop had another one for sale, three years later, so I bought that one too! Neither one came with box or goodies, just the gun - Oh well.
I have put about 200 rounds of .38 Special through one of them. Can you tell which one? Don't be afraid to shoot yours, at least once. That's what these things were meant for.

Nice revolver, OP.
I did no go looking for mine — I was searching for a snub nose 686 when this 627-0 found me. May decide to trade or sell it, so I want to keep it nice. Probably won’t shoot mine because I want to keep it pristine. Was told it has not been fired since it left the factory tested but, who knows. I will share a few picks of mine.
Congrats to you on a great pickup.
