How accurate are the 648s?
I'm think of getting a 648. I'd set it up with a 2x scope and use it as a small critter getter.
How good and accurate are the 648s? Is there some vintage of 48 or 648 that shoots better than others?
As this will mostly be a working gun, I'm mostly concerned with the shooting characteristics and mechanical soundness of the gun.

Every gun from any time period is an individual. If you get one that doesn't shoot tight groups with quality ammo, it's most likely the muzzle crown and/or the forcing cone. Both of these can be recut to perfect in 10 minutes.

Basically agree with what Protocall Design said. I haven't used one of the new 648s but can't imagine that they're not accurate guns. Might vary a bit on ammunition brand; some like certain types better than others. The older 48s are all great guns too although you can likely buy a new 648 for less than a used 48.
This no dash 648 with a little finish work is more accurate than I am by far. Not all that difficult to carry scoped either if you have old eyes like mine and need optics. Good luck.
