New Model 19 Detent
What is the purpose to the ball detent on the
New Model 19s?
Greater rigidity?
Does it work?
Any problems?

It does make it harder to open the cylinder.

I wonder if S&W will use it on other model revolvers?

Necessary for a two-point lockup (of sorts, the detent doesn't really "lock" it just "snaps").
The plunger that locks into the end of the ejector rod has been eliminated.

I assume it would also prevent the cylinder from getting stuck if the ejector rod un-threads itself.
