It is a buyers market now for 686's. I have been looking for awhile and ended up getting two 6"ones this week on gun broker. One is a -6 and the other is a no dash like new with box, tools and paperwork. The prices before tax, fees and shipping were about $500 for the -6 and $750 for the no dash. Maybe a bit of a good deal but not far from the going rate.

I think the internet sales have killed the gun show sales of firearms. I think most of the gun show sellers are getting them off local forums and flipping them at a higher price. But then…. I haven’t been to a gun show in several years. I quit going, they didn’t have anything to offer. Maybe things have changed?

S&W actually did make the 7-shooters for a short time before the Hillary began being installed. I have a 2” 686+-4 that has no lock.

686 "Silhouette" 6"
Grand day all, I am now the VERY proud owner of a new (certainly to me) 686 "Silhouette" (if Im reading the posts correctly) 6". It is a "no dash" nor Hillary Hole or "M" stamped model with the 4 position front sight. I've been looking around various sites and can't find any valuation info for the "Silhouette" (adjustable front sight) models. I'm also looking for a manufacture/shipment info. The Serial number is AJU9953. Might any of this august group be of assistance with my quest?

Your 686 is from 1986. I think you have to pay S&W to get shipment info.

The 686 is my all-time favorite handgun. I have a 4" and a 3" 7-shot. The 3" is my most-carried sidearm by far. It's just a great, great gun and super accurate.
factory 158gr Rem SJHP clocks 1200fps out of the 3"

There was a 3", 686 at my LGS a couple of days ago, tagged at 1200-1300? I want to say. Somewhere around there anyway. Sorry, I don't recall the dash number. I passed on it, and put a more mundane 4", 686-6 on layaway for $700. This will be my first 686 after about 40 years or so of ignoring them.

Man!! If prices were anything like what you guys posted where Im at Id have a vloset full of these. You cant fing a used S&W here for less than $900, and usually more. The range I frequent has a case full of really nice revolvers right now, and all of them are priced way too high. A 6" 686-3 for 950? No thanks. A 6" 27, thats not in the best shape for $1250? No thanks. And every one of them are absolutely filthy inside.
About 4 years ago I paid $900 for a 4" 686+ pre-lock and that hurt but it did come with a nice set of Culina grips and I really wanted it so I just forked it over. My really nice 586 I got for $750 at the end of "22.

I found this 4-inch dash-2 with the expected normal wear a few months ago at a LGS for $600 with rubber Hogues. That didn't pose a problem since I had plenty of stocks at home to replace them.

Gun.deals has the best prices on new guns by far. They use wikiarms as the search engine. Whenever I buy anything new that's the place I search first. Put any gun in the search bar by MFG number and it'll bring up the best price anywhere. Bought many a gun this way and the LGS prices don't even come close. Bought a new 642-1 and the place I bought it from beat the LGS by $150. Grab A Gun does have good prices but they are far from the best.

Some of the very earliest of the L-frames had the large S&W emblem on the right side/side plate and in my experience, the original box for these very early ones are the two piece old style blue boxes... the very last of the old style boxes before the new REVOLVER REVOLVER REVOLVER one-piece flip-top style box came to be.
So when you say yours are first year production with the box, are you talking about the old style two-piece box and large emblem on the side plate of each revolver? If yes, I would demand a premium for these, they are definitely scarce or possibly rare.
If you are simply talking about 686 and two 586's, all no dash with the small emblem on the left side under the cylinder release... then no, I would expect no premium for these.
With that said however, NIB with mint original boxes and end labels will put them near the top of the market.

Yes, I have one of the rare 5-inch "Hi-Viz" 7-shot 686-5 stocking dealer special (product code #104098). Lucked into it a few years ago at a LGS for a fair price--even for a "generic" 686--and had a difficult time finding much info on it.

Are we saying that the -4 plus is less common? I have a 6" + model. I know the -4 is considered by many to be the pinnacle, but I thought it was reasonably available. Or is it the + (7 shooter) that's less common?
