Hey all.

I’m gonna get a set of rubber grips for my 65 with 3-inch to enable more shooting practice. I’d like to know which one of these mitigates recoil more. Of course looks matter too, but I don’t think either of these will be a permanent solution. It’s just gonna give me time to figure out which grips will look best and more importantly, which works best for me.

As far as price, the Hogue Bantam is about $24 and the Pachmayr grips are about $35.

There looks to be 2 different styles of Pachmayr grips. Is there one style that is better than the other?

Please post your thoughts and experiences.

Thank you all for your continued help and suggestions.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Pachmayr Grippers cover the backstrap which can be a source of a lot of the felt recoil impulse.

Grippers have been my favorite for years.

Either the Bantam or the Pachmayrs (I presume for a RB K frame you are looking at the Compac, standard with the covered backstrap or the Professional without) may work for you.

Everything else being equal rubber on the back may made felt recoil less, but other factors come into play, such as how well the rest of the grip fits your hand, how high it positions the gun and whether the area behind the trigger guard being filled in raps your middle finger with firing. You may need to buy and try both and sell the one that doesn't work.

This. I prefer the Hogue’s, but that’s because they’re more comfortable for ME, they won’t necessarily be for the next guy/gal. Everybody’s hands are different.

Gotta try different things to find out what works best for you.

Enjoy.

Thank you all for your advice. I’m gonna order tomorrow so I’ll have more time to get opinions and suggestions.

Right now my factory grips have a crack on the backside at the bushing hole. It looks like the previous owner or armorer tightened them too much and pulled the bushing inward causing a crack.

I got in my parts box and found a set that I had that I forgot all about. They are BOOT style grips in hard black plastic, I think. It has finger grooves. They didn’t come with the screw and the factory one is too skinny. I found one that will work temporarily. These grips are no longer made and are from a maker that no longer exists. I think it’s a set of BYRON’s grips.

When I got them in place I noticed they make my wrist much higher than the factory Magna style with a Tyler’s. It’s not uncomfortable, but I could see how it might get there after a long range session.

So, I’m hoping that either of the ones I’m looking at will have a more relaxed hand position and will therefore be much more comfy to shoot.

Thanks all.

The Pachmyer Compac/Compac Pro is a real recoil absorber, especially into the palm. I have them on all of my round butt guns smaller than .44. Shown below is my RB 3" 686-3.

The Pachmayrs on my 64-3 are comfortable and make the gun easier to shoot.

The Hogues on my 65-5 are slimmer, still comfortable, but felt recoil is heavier.

The Uncle Mike’s on my long gone 10-8 were comfortable, lessened recoil, but were somewhat bulkier. Herrett’s offered a similar design in wood.

Of the two, I'd go with the pachmyer compacs. I just never have liked the Hogue rubber grips.
If you can find a set, my favorites for a RB K-frame have always been the old Uncle Mike's/Butler Creek boot grips. These fit my hand perfectly. You'll have to do some searching, but they are out there. ;)

Here is another vote for the Pachmayr compac grips. I have put thousands of rounds (both 38 +P and 357 magnum) through my 686, and wouldn’t dream of doing so with anything else!

I have tried many recoil reducing grips. The best for me is the Bantam grips which I put on my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. with 7.5 inch barrel and Leupold 2x handgun scope. I can shoot full power magnum loads all day with absolutely no pain! As an after thought: nothing helped the pain while shooting my S&W 629-6 44 mag.

Hogue Batam grips didn't fit me so installed older pair of Pachmayrs on 686 The Pachmayr Pro Diamond grips are very difficult to install and made not to be removed , I cut them off and tossed in the trash.

I have had good luck with the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips. They made my . 44 UDR a pleasure to shoot. I have been able to swap them out as needed. It takes a little effort to pull them off, but I am strong like bull.

In my opinion they do a superior job of taming harsh recoil.
