Stopped by the LGS today on the way to the range. I grabbed two S&Ws that came in from an estate.
First up is a model 17-4 8 3/8" with 3Ts. The stocks are beautifully figured walnut which I am fairly certain are original because when K masterpieces were sold new with the 3Ts, the target stocks that were supplied were always walnut. Goncalo Alves was always used on the 357 combat magnums only. This revolver was gorgeous and looked possibly unfired. 247K serial prefix and unpinned, dating it to 1982. No box, but otherwise pristine, $739 OTD!
Second was a model 65-3 with a 4" barrel. I don't where all the 4" 13s and 65s go but this is the first one I've run into in person in 4" in almost 25 years of collecting. It was a perfect mate for my 3" 65-3. It was fired lightly with 38s judging by the dirt marks in the chambers from the shorter .38 cases. 7D serial prefix and fitted with the .312" smooth combat trigger that became standard with the factory order of September 1, 1982, dating this one to 1982 as well. The polishing on this revolver is just beautiful, not high polished but slightly more than usual and among the best I've seen for factory stainless. I don't see any signs it was polished up by the previous owner. Maybe it was just a good day in the polishing room at the factory, but simply beautiful! The DA is like butter and the lock-up is tight as a drum, which suggests not a lot of firing with .357. No box and it was wearing a set of Hogue aftermarket grips, $439 OTD. I didn't realize until I took the grips off to clean the gun that this pair of Hogues is plastic and not rubber like the later ones. These must be an early set because much to my dismay, they were fitted the old fashioned way which required removing the stock locator pin, which is missing. I have a replacement pin on the way and when it arrives I'm going to install it along with a set of correct PC magnas I have waiting for this beautiful gun. That is why I'm showing it here without grips. I'm still very happy with both deals though!
