Model 625 demise?
Maybe this has been covered, but when I go to the Smith and Wesson website there is no .45 ACP listing under revolvers, and no 625. Did they actually quit making it? I thought it was popular, I have a 4" model that is one of my favorite guns to shoot.

They have ceased production on 45acp wheel guns, for the time being. Sure they are popular to us forum folks but to the first time gun owner or someone looking for a CCW, a big ole 6 shot 45 acp stainless N frame just isn't as appealing as a 686 or 642 or that new fancy shield x plus that holds 13+1.
You can also tell the news has spread quickly. Evidence, like closed GB auction prices, have shown over the last couple of months that these are still in high demand. Lock or no lock, all of the 45 wheel guns are going for a premium right now. I'm glad I've held onto mine, my model of 1988 with action job and Wilson Springs is one of my best shooters.

The only revolver in 45 L C is the m25 there’s no 45 acp. And a few more N frames are gone too. Well have to watch if they do short production runs in the future. You would think they would offer two cylinders one in 45 LC the other in 45acp? I would buy one in a heart beat. The second the sales and demand falls off the gun manufacturers seem to drop the hot potato. I hope the revolver market picks up sales wise. I think the plastic pistols have peaked.
Ruger offers there Blackhawk in convertible, in 357/9mm, 40 cal/10mm and 45acp/45 LC,

N frame .45acp’s are my absolute favorite. Certainly hope their omission is only temporary. Also have a Thunder Ranch in 45acp.

My preference is .45 Colt but I certainly understand the .45 ACP concept.
This was a grail gun for me awhile back:

I am glad I still have my 3 and 5 inchers - I regret trading the 4”. I also have 2 MGs in 45 Colt.

46 acp revolvers are my favorites. No policing brass and super fasst reloads. I never understood an autoloader cartridge in a revolver till I owned one. Now it my absolute favorite and the variety of them available is astounding. One of my favorites..and yes I shoot it a lot...

My enjoyment of ACP revolvers is fairly well known. When the factory did not make what I wanted, I converted a 4” Model 28-2. If I need to, I will do it again! It is the lower left in the photograph.
Some of my favorites, ready to go.

From the barrel shape and front sight, I am guessing a 4”, 45 long Colt, perhaps a Model 25-5?

S&W has dropped popular calibers in the past only to resurrect them down the road. The difference lately is the popularity of their autos with police/military as well as civilian personnel.
This makes it more difficult to schedule shared machine time for revolvers.
The 610 and 657 are examples that lived another day after being 'dropped'.

I'm a big fan of 45acp revolvers, but due to the current state of the ammo market, I've found myself shooting my 625-2 a lot more than my four older revolvers. Reason being, I was able to buy a bunch of 45gap rounds (30 cents/round), and I know the 625 can easily handle the higher pressure. I own very few S&W revolvers that dont have a pin in the barrel, but I was attracted to 625 based on the recommendations of a friend and opinions on this forum. It is a great revolver. Too bad it's gone. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes big bore revolvers that don't beat you up. If you want to go retro with a 45acp revolver, the models 1950 (left) and 1955 are both off the charts great revolvers. Both of these are over 65 years old. No photos, but I also shoot 1917's from both Colt and S&W. It really cool to shoot a piece of history.

Don’t forget the Night Guard.
Not a 625. But a great carry gun.

Love my 625-3...and kicking myself for selling the 5" -3 (w. box) several years ago. I do hope S&W brings them back. In the meantime, the current S$W .45 revolver prices are soon going to seem dirt cheap. Buy one if you can find one.

My 625-8 JM Special is one of my all time favorites! I have shot it a LOT! Since I cast my own bullets and reload, the ammo shortage hasn't reared it's ugly head for me, yet! Hopefully, we'll get back to normal while I still have some primers!
After I lost the vision in my right eye, I switched eyes, and with the Red Dot sight, I was pleasantly surprised to have my shooting back at top level in only two sessions!
I gifted my youngest son, my 5" 625-6. It is also a stellar performer!

Here's my 625. Grips by Hogue. The red dot is lost in my 'sometimers disease' right now.
After more thought - the scope is an old Redfield multi choice red dot. It hasn't been offered in many years.

I am fortunate to have three S&W revolvers in 45 ACP. One is a 4" 625 and the other two are Model 22's. One has a 4" tube, and the other is a near-duplicate of the 1950 Army model.
I carried the 625 when I was a private detective in Kansas.

A few days after taking possession of my 625-8 4 inch it was announced here that Smith had discontinued it. Guess I got lucky and snared one of the last ones made. I'm glad I pulled the pin when I did. No it is NOT for sale. bob

I shoot only cast bullets in mine. It ought to last a few lifetimes. I use both .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim cases. I also use both Ranch Products steel full moon clips and RIMZ plastic full moon clips, where appropriate.
These are very versatile handguns, both On the Range and In the Field!

I just picked up a 325 Thunder Ranch. Primarily because I couldn't find a Model 21 or 22 locally. I wonder how the value is going to weigh against the 625 in the coming years?

Thanks for the information, and even more for all the pics of wheel guns. I am confident the .45 ACP 625 will be available again new at some point.

Some guns, like the .45 ACP revolvers, whether out of production or not seem to always be desirable and hold values well, unless it's some weird, impractical, and expensive variation that few want.

I've been trying to score a 625 on GB for awhile now without remortgaging the house and giving up my first born child. Just landed one tonight. It hasn't shipped yet but I absolutely can't wait to see how my new 5" 625-6 performs. My 629 Deluxe is an absolute beast. Love big bore revolvers!

45 ACP in a revolver would be fun but N frames are too big imo. How about a model 69 in 45 ACP?

To my knowledge there's never been an L-frame in .45 ACP. .44 Magnum is a great round but I don't reload and in this neck of the woods .45 ACP is about half the cost. A steady diet of .44 Magnum or even .44 Special is just too rich for my blood.

The only 45acp revolver I own is a 1st contract Brazilian one. I use RIMZ full moon clips when shooting it. Does it ever draw spectators. My deceased buddy had one of the Ruger convertables in 45 colt and 45 acp. While he had success with the 45 Colt cylinder it drove him nuts when he could not get the 45 acp cylinder to shoot. Changed bullets, powders, primers and cases but still joy. Frank

Does anyone know when S&W discontinued the 625? Was it 2020 or 2021?

This has been addressed previously but the “Cliff Notes” version is the cylinder of the L frame is not large enough to accept 5 rounds of 45 ACP. Nor could it hold the pressure.
Which is too bad because I have been wishing for one since they first introduced the 686.

Back in 2009 I found and bought a very nice 625-2 from a local gunshop. I paid $625 OTD. Have enjoyed shooting it. Very accurate easy to use revolver in the almost most American of handgun calibers ... .45 ACP. Five in barrel is all anyone could want. Back when I bought this revolver, the folks that ran the local police matches had informed me that my six inch 686 would no longer be permitted since it was one inch to long. Oddly, almost all the fellows were shooting 1911's ... hardly any shot issue Glocks. That 625 was a bid disconcerting ... it looked ... to long. But, nope! And that butter soft DA made it easy to chop great big hole in the target. With moon clips that thing is the business for such work. Just run the cylinder, drop the empty and drop in a full moon clip and your back in business. Just a very easy gun to use for all manner of shooting from matches to whatever needs shooting out in the woods/fields. So thankful I didn't keep walking back in 2009. Sincerely. bruce.

You could be right about not holding 5 rounds of 45 ACP but pressure? The 69 handles the pressure from 44 mag so 45 ACP would not be a problem.

I sure like my 4" 625-8. I use Auto Rim brass uxclusively and shoot 250-255 grain cast bullets over 6.5 grains of Longshot for 825-865 fps.

Realizing I hi-jacked this thread from 2011. But my question remains unanswered. Does anyone know what year Smith stopped making the 625?

Even though I have three 45 wheelguns, my favorite is now my 610 4".

If Smith would put out Lew Horton Style with 3" one piece, full-under-lugged barreled versions with Goncalo Alves "Combats" (sans hole's always) they would sell like 5gallon buckets of water in hell... 4" barreled full under-lugged versions too.

Cutting more metal out of the cylinder reduces the hoop strength. Apparently enough to make it iffy.

Thanks a lot. Just when I have my collection how I want it now you've got me thinking I need a couple 10mm revolvers. This revolver addiction truly is progressive. And expensive!

As far as I know it was late last year or early this year. I think S&W sent a notice to their distributors that it was a discontinued model but I don't recall when that was.

I just got a 625-6 5” the other day. I have been wanting one for years. I’ve shot it a few times, I just got a supply of moon clips in (Rimz and Ranch products)

Can’t let this thread go idle!
Been on a tear lately adding to my 625 and 45 acp revolver collection. This includes another 625-2 model of 1988, a 625-4 5” NIB, another 625 Mountain Gun NIB, and a LNIB PC 625-8 each were under $800. I was blessed to come across an estate sale at one of my LGS and the prior owner was a stainless n frame aficionado. I’d like to think we would have been good friends if we ever met before he passed.
Question for the experts, while adding some new wood stocks for the 2 model of 1988s I have, I noticed different roll mark placements on them. Both are BEC serials and the numbers are close to each other, however one has a small roll mark under the cylinder release and the other has the large roll mark on the side plate. Did one precede the other? Photo for reference below (as well as the PC because why not).
Thanks in advance
