Found this at a local show today. Factory fired, still has powder in 3 cylinders and the barrel, stored in box 3" Chief's Special. 1990 ish?

SCSW 3rd ED says: Product code 102298 3" S TH TT FL AS SG RB. ANIB price of $500. I got it for $460. I usually compare prices with the BB of Gun Values but can't find it in my edition. Does anyone have the 30th Edition and could shed some light on the value?

I like the gun so $ is really a moot point! I do however need to do something about the Uncle Mike's Santoprene Grips. Round butt finger grooved?? rags

According to the spec. ord. code, it would be the 301st day of 1993.

Very nice find, one of the best J frames ever built.

Rags24,
Fantastic find. You are gonna love that gun. My wife and I each own one. As far as the grips, We have Pachmayr compacs on both of ours. Most folks like the look of wood, but these seem to work best for us.
As an aside, both of our guns have red ramp front, and white outline rears sights. They seem to be uncommon on this model, as most every gun I see had the black sights like yours. Same product code also. No absolutes when it come to S+W.
Enjoy your find,
Tom

I take issue with only the "one of". Im MHO this is the very best J ever built. And I own two 2" Mod 60s plus my beloved Mod 317 and half a dozen other J models. The Pac Compac is a good choice. They looks a lot better than the factory rubber and feels fine. My 60-4, while in the safe wares the best pair of Lady Smith grips I could find.
Rags, not only was that a great find and a great price, your photos are worthy of such a fine S&W. Congratulations !-- Tom

I found a LNIB Model 60-4 several years ago in a local gun shop and bought it without ever putting it down. I really like those "Baby L Frames."

Nice! The shows I've been to seemed to have pretty high prices. That's if you could even get close enough to the tables to see the price. I would have definitely bought that one at that price!

Although the grips are growing on me, I really like wood better, at least to look at. They feel great but have in my mind trying something like this...

Mrs. Rags, Sir: Being a new member here, I have to ask....did you arm wrestle the seller for that kind of price?! Holy Moley! If I could find one for anywhere near $460 even close to that condition, I'da thunk I'd died & gone to Heaven! My best pal has one, I have to fondle everytime I go over his house. He paid $475 last Fall & I thought HE did good!
Respectfully, H-F Hank

Good find!! I did not realize the model 60 had an adjustable sight. Is there a particular series of this model or how can you do a search for it? I never bought a model 60 because the ones I saw had fixed sights only.

I have had a 60-4 since they hit the market. I am a sucker for a good "trail gun" and this is arguably the best trail gun ever. I shoot mine well (have shot a number of 96's on a 25 yard timed fire target). I would have opted for a 4" barrel but this is the way they came. I was pleasantly surprised how well it shoots with that 3" double underlug barrel. The weight forward balance helps a BUNCH.

I have shot the heads off Grouse and put rabbits in the pot. I carry it crossdraw and never know I have it on until I need it.

+1 in praise of the 3" M60-4. Remarkably accurate and very easy to carry. Also a little hard to find; I'd say that you did very well. -S2

Great little guns. Missed out on a 36-6 so when the 60-4 came along I moved fast.

Too bad they never made a .22 LR version.

S&W first made adjustable sight M-60's in 1985 (SCS&W III says 1986, but I bought mine 7-1-1985) for Ashland Shooters Supply. They were 2 inch barrel, round butt. The 3 inch guns with the full underlug began in 1990.

S&W had made blue Chief Specials with adjustable sights several times, sometimes as "Chiefs Special Targets", Model 36's or Model 50's, depending on when they were made. All of those are pretty scarce.

A friend of mines mother had a pair of these as her "house guns" for many years. When she could no longer handle the .38 she sold them. I was able to buy one of them but later sold it after acquiring a second 60-10 3" .357 Magnum.

This was the best .38 Special pre-stretch frame J made...second best would be the 60-1 2" Target...I have one of those also...

As to price paid...I'll bet unfired in the box it would bring $600+ on one of the auction sites..

Lucky guy. You'll love it. I gave mine to my friend as a house gun when his first child was born. Very accurate I could easily hit clay pedgeons at 25 yards.
BTW. My friend wound up saving his wife and now 10 year old daughter from a raging Pit bull with this revolver. Unfortunately he was bitten badly, but OK after a number of stiches. Dog had a history in the neighborhood. Owners were arrested after bitching about the shooting to the police.

Mini, you do realize this is a 3 yr. old thread, right?

Regardless, that 60-4 is a great revolver. I just paid a small fortune a couple of months ago for a NIB one.

Fantastic guns, extremely accurate. I saw the very rare 5" version (60-18?) in a LGS today, but it was pricey at $700.

I don't mind seeing the topic again and the pics. I think the M-60-4 is one of the best guns S&W ever made.

The factory advised me that it is the first stainless Chief to be warranted for use with Plus P ammo, BTW. Any suffix of -4 or later is Plus P okay.

Mine wears Pachmayr Presentation Compac grips. They handle recoil well and make the gun steady in a sweaty hand. It came with Uncle Mike's, but I don't like them quite as well. Mine has the casehardened hammer and trigger. I previously had the flashchromed ones, and bittely regret having to sell the gun while out of work. Only dire necessity forced me to sell one of the last guns that I'd let go. I replaced it ASAP.

Both of these guns think they're K-38's, judging by how they shoot. They are far easier to shoot well than the normal snub M-60, but I want one of those again, too.

I applied a sort of flourescent orange fingernail polish to the front sight. It's pretty visible.

I don't at all doubt the post above by the man who says that he can shoot the head off of a grouse with his M-60-4. It's snake head-accurate, too.

Thanks MINI! I love thread revivals!! Thanks for the comments.

I still have it, and it will remain with me until the good Lord calls for me. SWEET shooter. I know a bit more about these now, some years later, but I'm still excited when I see the little "Mini L frame".

Thanks again for bringing this thread back up. I think I'll go get it out, wipe her down and fondle her a bit! I'll pack it up the next time I get to the range...

[My last trip I took 2 3rd Gens, 2 M&P C's and a 5" 27-2 Blue that was unfired. (Skeeter was right!)]

Nice thread revival! It made me go to the safe and drag my own 60-4 out for some admiration. These truly are great "all round"/kit guns. Mine wears CT 305 grips now but here it is an hour after I found it stuffed in the corner of a LGS case for $350. :-)
