Looking at a Midnight black 686-3, 4". No box or paperwork. Owner says only a very slight turn line. Other than that the finish, is perfect. He's asking $1800. That seems high. What are these going for? I noticed the 4" are the rarest,of this model.

It’s a nice gun but I’m not sure it’s $ 1800 nice. And I don’t see what this model brings compared to a nice 586

I’d even be worried that the finish may be less durable

In looking at several gun auction sites, the "asking" prices on vintage S&W revolvers, especially the ones considered rare and new in the box or in excellent condition, are ridiculous these days. Would be too high for me. But it fits into the new "normal" asking prices at the present time and it might sell for that. I'm stuck in the past and remember the days not too long ago, you were able to find a new in the box or near new S&W 686 for $500-$700 tops! I'm old and set in my ways and won't participate in paying 3 to 4 times what something is worth, including guns and ammo. But thats just me. However, many is the occasion in the past that I have overspent on a firearm because I had to have it. Good luck with your decision.

No box/papers $700 max and I would not even buy it for more than $600. The midnight finish isn't good and was a failure. A 686-3 in the same condition is worth considerably more I think. A 586-3 and 686-3 I value about the same in the market, to me the 586-3 a little higher. The 586-4 to me is the best and I paid $1K a few years ago for a NIB example. It is going nowhere.

The Midnight black finish was a flop! It was not durable! It would wear very fast if carried in a holster and darn near wiped off with a rag! A gun like this has some value as an collector item only if it has the original box, which states the Midnight black finish! IMHO, $1800 is too high for a 100% gun w/box! WO/box it is a shooter!

I agree with the above. I had a 6 inch 686 Midnight Black (99% with the box and tools) years ago and called S&W and actually spoke with Mr. Jinks about the gun. I inquired about the value and collectability....& to quote Mr. Jinks "the finish is not durable and that's one of the reasons it was not continued"......in regards to the value..."well, they didn't sell very well & in his opinion they are not worth any more than any other 686 in similar condition".

I traded mine off shortly thereafter.

It is interesting to me that this finish didn’t work, but now Melonite/Tenifer and other current processes for blackening stainless steel do. Maybe they had not been invented yet, or the stainless alloy was different then?

No! I don't think an NIB example would fetch $1800. I think the owner of this particular 686 Midnight has an asking price that is $1000 too high.
