I've been wanting a J-frame with more heft for quite a while now, and the opportunity finally presented itself. Today, I picked up a used 640-3 from my local gun shop! Another regular at the gun shop turned in the 640 as part of a trade, so I swooped right in and told the shop owner I would buy it!

I've included some photos below, and I will post my observations after I take it to the range tomorrow.

I'm a big fan of the stainless steel j frames. I've owned a 640 but have always gravitated to the 649's more for some reason. I shoot them all double action but just having the option for single action always romances me!

I have long owned a 640-1. It was my first CCW handgun and I still CCW it when I need deep concealment. A bit of a handful with full power 357 Magnum ammo, but very controllable with 38 Special +P.

Great purchase, you'll like it. I have owned several. My current, and probably last one, is a 60-9. It was the last one without the infernal hole lock and the slightly longer ejection rod made the ejection of 357 rounds easier and more positive. With 38+P, it's a dead certain that it will clear all spent rounds unless you block one by using the wrong grips or technique.

I've had a couple of 640-1 models, but had to look up what a 640-3 was.
From my SCSW here's my answer if anybody else was wondering or if I should ever re-read this thread again someday:

"Engineering and production changes:

640-1 1996 Introduction on new redesigned J magnum frame
640-2 1997 Reintroduce in .38 Spl. for NYPD
640-3 2003 Internal Key lock on .357 Magnum
640-4 2003 Internal Key Lock on .38 Spl only

A 640-1 has been my edc for quite a few years now. It's little brother, a 642 is my backup. Love those Centennial's! Congrats on getting a great carry gun.

I took the 640-3 to the range today! I mostly fired 38 Special as that is what I had the most of that I was willing to shoot, but I also fired a few rounds of 38+P and two cylinders of 357 Magnum. I started with a cylinder of 38 Special to give myself a baseline, then went to 38+P, followed by 357 Magnum. I then went back to 38 Special to finish my session.

The difference in felt recoil between the 38 Special standard pressure and the 38+P was less than I expected, which was reassuring, but HOLY COW the 357 Magnum was indeed a handful! It is great knowing I have the capability of carrying 357 Magnum in such a small revolver, but I think I'll leave my range fun with 357 to my 28-2 Highway Patrolman.

Regardless, I was happy with the feel when firing 38+P. That was something I was never satisfied with when I would shoot my 642, and is why I preferred the few decent options I think are available for 38 Special standard pressure self defense loads when I had the 642. It may not matter much now that I mostly carry 9mm, but as I consider my J-frame as an additional carry option, I wanted to have a revolver I could conceal that would also allow me to fire 38+P more comfortably. Also, while there are some good options in self defense rounds in standard pressure 38 (I like Hornady Critical Defense FTX in this respect), I think the performance and overall availability/range of choice of 38+P self defense rounds is much, much better. All of these reasons went into why I switched from the 642 to 640.

Overall, I expect my new to me 640-3 to be an excellent carry piece!

LOVE my -1 Pro.

I carry it daily with +P .38s.

I would suggest the Delta Grip from Ergo Grips. They fill the space behind the trigger guard and really help control recoil.
