Hello folks,

I have never carried a larger revolver concealed. I have read that revolvers can carry well AIWB based on body type. (I am 5'8" and 160lbs). I've seen reviews re this revolver but no one has demonstrated an IWB carry. (I like the idea of 357 cal. with an 8 shot capacity).

How doable is this? Or is carrying this revolver concealed completely crazy?

Thanks in advance,

-Dave

It's like sticking a pop can with a handle in your pants. Unless you wear very baggy clothes (like football or basketball jerseys) it will be hard to pull off. And you'll need pants that are a bit wider in the waist.

I am not too far away from your size but have always carried outside the waist. I think an 8 shot N frame cylinder would be pretty bulky inside the waist and you would have to size up your clothes in that dimension. Others will probably differ. :)

Carrying concealed is not crazy, it is a matter of how you dress

Personally I have carried my 627 UDR in the belt holster that the Factory first offered with it more than 20 years ago. Back then DeSantis was making the factory holster

I have never looked for an IWB holster for this revolver. It should be doable, I have IWB holsters for 4" and 5" N-frames

Now I do pocket carry the 327 Night Guard more often than you would think. It works just fine in the 5.11 Covert Khakis front pocket. Some of the Dockers Golf pants also work quite well due to their deep pockets

The weight reduction from the Scandium alloy frame really spoils you when it come to toting around an 8 shot N-frame :)

Can you post pic or link to holster? Thanks...

IWB an N-frame? I guess it can be done, but I think the soda/beer can with a handle stuck inside your pants is a pretty good analogy. Personally, I think a pancake holster would be a good way to carry an N-frame. It will keep the revolver tucked close to the body and the distance between the belt slots will spread the weight over a wider area.

Heh. After reading the OP, first thing I thought was, "Come on, Man!"
5-8 and 160, and you want to IWB an N frame. And a 6" at that. Well, Having carried a 6" or three back in the old days as a uniform duty gun, I've got to tell you, that's crazy. (I'm 5-10, low 200s.)
Are you an old guy or a young one? I retired from police work in 2014 after 35 years, all of it in uniform with either a crossdraw or a high-ride. Over the years, I used 4 and 6" K-frames, a 6" 686, a 4" and a 6" Model 28. I also carried a couple different 3d Gen semis. I still have serious back problems including disc damage and a pinched nerve, from carrying all that weight on my belt. My favorite doctor is the pain management specialist.
:(
Here's the point. I see you have a badge icon, so I expect you're in LE in some capacity. Here's some unsolicited advice based on my own very painful experience: use the lightest gun you can, with the smallest footprint, caliber and capacity you're comfortable with. Save your back! Carrying an N frame, even in the waistband, will cause you more problems than it's worth. I eventually settled on a 3913 because it was the lightest metal-frame semi that was worth carrying and allowed by the department. Nowadays, you have the S&W M&Ps, which I'd definitely use if I was still active.
For all you guys that carry these monsters in a pocket or wherever daily, God Bless ya. Gotta tell you though, nothing comes without a price. Be well, everybody! :D

I've got too much belly to be carrying IWB. Without suspenders a wider waist band would probably allow my pants to fall down. (be sure and wear clean underwear) I don't like suspenders. If a situation came up and I was carrying IWB I would first have to pull my shirt up and hold it with one hand while I pulled my belly up to look for the gun with my other hand. If I can find it then I gotta think which hand I'm gonna let go of to be able to pull the gun out. By then I'm probably in trouble. Suspenders would only make the problem worse as I would be in danger of getting the gun wrapped up in them. Also, I have a fear of shooting my junk carrying IWB. I function quite well with an open top OWB holster and a loose shirt.

Can you post pic or link to holster? Thanks...
I do not have the holster photographed

The Factory website no longer offers that holster. This was back in the 1990s. Factory affiliations change over time.

However if you go to Gene DiSantis' website I am certain he has several offerings that will work well with that firearm

Xs two on the OWB pancake. with an over sized untucked shirt. i always leave my bottom shirt button undone for easier access. drives my wife crazy but that's a local run. usually have a mdl 60 strongside and 642-1 in left pocket but have done 4" 629 just to see if i could.

both wear different grips now as i don't like the rubber ones. krs/kenneth r smith

I bought a Galco shoulder holster and carried it under a suit coat. Its pretty bulky. I came to my senses after awhile and decided I didn't want to loose the gun to the evidence room if I ever had to use it.

I carry a 4”, N frame every day. Not IWB, I prefer a holster on my belt. The photo shows my preference. Others prefer pancakes or more modern holsters. This is what works for me.

Sounds like a lot of comments from people who have never carried an N frame IWB. If you can carry a 3" L frame you can carry a 2.6" N frame. The size and weight difference is negligible. Hardly a soda can with a handle... I have carried 2.5", 3" and 4" L frames and the 627 N frame IWB and they are all very doable. If you don't want to carry anything bigger than a J frame or subcompact semi that's cool. But saying the larger guns can't be carried comfortably is nothing but excuses and laziness...

People often overlook the waist size on pants.
I get it. Hard to walk up to the counter to purchase. 2-3 inches wider. Ego is an odd animal.
Stiff belt. Good pancake holster. Include the pistol when trying on pants.
If it seems to heavy, I hit the weights.
This is a Simply Rugged pancake. Wore it 10 hours just yesterday.
629 3” with 44 magnum Gold Dots at approx 1000fps 500 ft lbs.
Definitely a flying ashtray!

I have a 327 snub. It is an N frame as is the 627 (also have the 4" 627).

I have carried the 327 and 627 IWB but only after I lost 75 lbs due to a cancer diet with throat cancer. I would suggest larger wasted pants.

I would carry it appendix or just IWB but my iwb holster for it is a piece of ****/

I carry the 327 in the cargo pocket of Duluth Trading cargo pants.

A 2.6 inch 627 would definitely work in a cargo pocket and since I want a 2.6 inch and carry my 627 iwb at times I am sure it would work fine.

Flor my 327 I got Stick Holster to make a pocket holster for it. I also use it to pocket carry a Glock 27.

The snub 627 might be heavier but I am sure it is a doer iwb or pocket.

I carried a S&W 686+ 3" in my cargo pocket yesterday and was surprised how the weight was not a problem for me.

Your comfort mileage may vary.

1. Shoulder Holster with a cover garment.
2. OWB Cross Draw with a strong belt. (try different cross draw angles)

The size, for me, is easy. The weight is what Aggravates my back. I carry my 7 shot 617 Taurus at times. On good days it’s no problem in the waist around 2:OK. When my back gets tired that 30oz gets heavy. I can carry a J-Frame in the same place and another in my pocket, no problem. I wish back in the day I would have bought the lightweight 617.

I carry a 69, 5 round, 4.25” S&W in a Galco crossdraw. I’ll switch off with my 629 5” classic. I live in a cool climate and usually wear a windbreaker. I do my best to conceal and after that I don’t concern myself with whether it can be noticed or not.

But saying the larger guns can't be carried comfortably is nothing but excuses and laziness...
A pinched nerve isn't an "excuse," nor is it "laziness." Everything, including carrying a brick in the waistband, has a price. You may not pay now, but you will eventually. Generations of cops with bad backs aren't lying.
