I did a search, but couldn’t decide what the answer is.

Can the two-piece barrels be swapped out on K-frame or J-frame revolvers?

I talked to a lady at S&W who couldn’t definitively say yes, so she couldn’t give a price.

Good question, have been wanting a shorter barrel on my 460 but can't find out if it is doable.

With the barrel and shroud system, it should certainly be possible. Dan Wesson pioneered the concept back in the 1970's with his line of DIY swappable barrel revolvers. With S&W, however, there is no nut at the muzzle end that the user can easily remove.

If you are asking if the Factory can change one multi piece barrel for another on an individual frame. The answer is absolutely yes.

If you are asking can a multi piece barrel be swapped out where a single piece barrel used to be (or the other way around). That answer is no, or at least not without significant expense.

If you are asking if multi piece barrels can be swapped out in the field by the end user. From the Factory's standpoint that answer would be a no. From a technology standpoint it is possible but it is not as simple of a issue as with a Dan Wesson

The two piece barrel assemblies use a wrench that engages the rifling to tighten it. First of all that wrench is not available to the public. Secondly it is designed to tighten, turning the wrench in the opposite direction would cause the wrench to disengage the rifling

On the three and four piece barrel assemblies it would be theoretically easier to swap barrel assemblies since there is a nut on the muzzle end of the assembly that can be engaged with an adjustable spanner wrench

I am pretty sure that there is a company making a fixed spanner wrench for that nut.

Yes is doable on your 460 S&W Magnum.

Special tools are required to perform the task properly. They are factory only or custom fabricated.

The biggest issue for attempting this is preventing/holding the barrel in place when tightening the "barrel nut" for all the models 10.5" and shorter (exception are the 2 standard models SKU 163460 and 16465).

As the barrel threads are threaded the same direction on each end, meaning the direction for tightening the barrel nut will loosen the frame to barrel connection; hence the need to hold the barrel when torquing the barrel nut.

I should note here that the barrel nut is integral with the muzzle brake on most models.

The tool is inserted into the barrel must match the lands and groves , since a progressive twist is used, each barrel length need a different tool.

Only one model of the 460 has a nut with spanner type nut.
The ES models use a insert to engage the nut similar to torx.

The above mentioned SKU 163460 and 16465 require a slightly different challenge as the barrel is thread only on the frame connecting end. It has a flange on the other and the barrel is actually tightened as an assembly. This system requires a crush washer be placed under the flange to to adjust the the BC gap.

In some past thread I have provide pictures of the pieces required.

For most is an easier exercise just to buy the length you want to start with.
