A friend found the above mentioned at a pawn shop, serial is BRW, is it call a Backpacker? Is it a standard release model or LH of some sorts? He didn't proved picture. Grips were Hogue with SW logo.

What's the going value on this? He said shop was asking $1300. Gun only, excellent condition.

Did he stumble into a uncommon gun and should pick it up ASAP?

I don't see anything special about in the SCSW. Even as a special run for Lew Horton or a Backpacker it's not that big a deal unless I missed something somewhere. $1300 is probably in the high end of the ballpark. I dumped my LH M629 3" years ago for around $950.

Packer up

Not made no more. Revolver, Box, and Accoutrements
and if we’ll taken care of…..>$1500.00.

For some reason the S&W Backpacker 44Rem Mag
is popular and has a cult following.

The Best of luck.

One was for sale here a few years back, and I decided to buy it. It is a 629-4, 3 inch with BSB 62xx serial number. The only "Backpacker" markings are on the box. As our "Internet shooting companion" says, "Its a great .44 Special that can shoot magnums"! Mine is a great gun, and most of the Smiths made in the 90s seem to be great. Great steel, great actions, and good looks. Hammer mounted hammer nose. As far as I'm concerned, MIM and frame mounted firing pins are a step back!
Obviously, you are interested enough to ask. So, take a look and look for quality of action, evidence of use/abuse, and action function. Negotiate from there, as there is really no premium for a LH here, It is a shooter, and they do that great. I really like shooting the 200 grain RNFP, non coated, with 6.1 grains of Trail Boss. Pleasant and accurate.

Post pictures of your new acquisition tomorrow!!:-)

I have a 629-4 Backpacker model. It's a special revolver in my opinion and would be one of the very last guns I would ever sell.
I bought it many years ago.

Is the one you're considering worth $1,300? If it's a high-condition gun, it probably is considering what high-quality pre-lock Smith revolvers are currently selling for.

First, it's a dash 4, and that's a good thing.
The barrel is not ported, and that's my preference.

And it's a great shooter, quite accurate and powerful enough for pretty much whatever you might need a handgun for.
Pretty compact, too, considering it's a .44 magnum.

S/N: BRM62xx
The box says BACKPACKER on the label, but the gun itself is marked like a normal 629-4 (doesn't say "backpacker" on it anywhere, nor is there any etchings of a bear, etc).

Here's a few pics, including one with it in a Guide's Choice chest holster:

I gave ya'll comments to my friend, he passed, I didn't. Went early this morning, came home with it. thx Nightowl! Shop had wood grips on but said the Hogue was original factory that came with the gun. Gave me both sets with gun and honor the original ask.

Here are some pics. If call SW CS would they able to tell if its a original backpacker by the serial?

Not to hijack the thread but is there something about the 629-4 that would make it significant improvement over a 629-3? Are the -3's or older problematic in some areas?

Thanks!

I'm confused, the product code isn't even listed in the SCSW, does anyone know how many were made, years etc, seems like a pretty obvious oversight since this appears to be a popular and well known model.

Nice pick up! With those grips you got a pretty good deal! I have a 629-4 Backpacker as well, people do seem to like them.

I got mine from a member here, it had Pachmayer's on it when I got it. Those grips on it in the pic are Badger Boot Grips
