Local Gun Shop has a NIB S&W 386 Night Guard with a price tag of $999?
Is this overpriced?

That’s a great price! Snatch it up!

If you decide you don't want it, please PM me the dealer contact so I can buy it.

FWIW, I have the 386PD (7 shot, Ti cylinder, 2.5") and the 386Sc Mountain Lite (7 shot, Ti cylinder, 3.125")

The Night guard ought to have a SS cylinder, which brings the weight from about 19oz for my 386s to about 24oz, which is perfect. I'm waiting for Cylinder and Slide to call for my Mountain Lite to have a SS cylinder installed to bring the weight up.

ETA: Expect to have to replace the tritium vial in the front night sight.

I bought a new 396 NG in I think 2008 and paid close to $900.00 then. Wish I had bought several. Put it in a good holster and it almost isn't there...

The 386 is one of the more common of the night guards but there still isn’t enough to go around for all of us. I’m thinking nice ones bring around 1600 on the auctions.

Through the kind grace of JRuss, who decided to pass on the gun, I’ve bought it.

Photos show it to be in like new condition.

Thanks JRuss!!!

Eh, having troubles with photos. Will add later.

That is a fine addition to the family

I am quite fond of the Night Guards.

I think they came out a bit too early in the growth curve of personal concealed carry

I think that if the six shot 38spl +P K frame Model 315 were offered from S&W today it would sell like the proverbial hot cakes.

A modern Model 12, essentially.

I'm not sure. They would sell some but, most would probably buy the bottom feeding micro compact 9MMs.

Heck, I had to explain what a 396 Night Guard was to all five employees at a LGS last year so they would understand why I was so excited to see it in the consignment case. The kicker was, four of the five were over the age of 50.

I work Sunday mornings at a gun counter. While it’s true that lots of 9mms and 380s of all descriptions get sold, a lot of Airweight J frames get sold, plenty of the new version of the Colt Cobra. That’s about 14oz on the light side and about 28oz on the heavy side. At 24oz the 386 Night guard fits right in.

Heavier revolvers like Ruger 101s get sold, but they don’t move as quickly.

I think steel K frames would be great sellers too, but we haven’t had any in a long time.

Interestingly, at least to me, is the high number of 1911s sold, mostly full size, mostly 45ACP.

Worth noting is that I live in Maryland, which is not a shall issues state. We still sell P365s and Glock 43Xs in high numbers though.

I would bet that the 642s, 442s and Ruger LCRs sell because of their price point. The more expensive small revolvers sit around awhile. The Night Guards if reintroduced, would be $1100-1200 retail.

That's lowest price for a NG that I've seen. Good deal!
The funny thing is, I would have paid what he was asking but, I asked what his bottom dollar was first. Turns out it was my lucky day.
