It's a term used for fancy firearms. Engraved with fancy grips and tooled custom leather seems to be the standard. It derives from a gathering (barbeque) whereas the guns are worn for showing off. It's a well-known custom here in Texas primarily amongst Law Enforcement circles.

The irony is that I can’t go to a barbecue without having a few adult beverages. Therefore no guns! I love the concept tho!

That is an incorrect assumption - the barbecue gun is like jewelry, it's worn to be shown off for fun. Wear it UNLOADED and toss it in your trunk or the back seat on the way home but, well, don't drink and drive so wait until you're not buzzed and THEN toss the pretty guns into the trunk or back seat, etc.

Any of these will work and, sadly, some are a little rough "metal-wise" due to water and foam exposure that got into my safe during my 2018 fire but in a holster nobody would ever notice:

These I have worn to a FONRA "party" - they wore Pearlite grips at the time but they're prettier now:

Why can't you drink beer with a gun on you?

I have nothing engraved, so my Colt’s Diamondback will serve BBQ duty this spring.

I have stag grips coming (I hope, after the Hillbilly Grips thread,) and a Lobo Gun Leather elephant hide trimmed cordovan holster on order.

Photo of Diamondback below, shown with an Agent with factory hammer shroud.

Since a few Colts snuck in under the door, I guess mine will be OK...A 70 Series National Match built by my late friend, Art Collins...Technically it's still mine, but my will specifies it goes to another long-time friend who is in possession of it now, and who wants to wear it during his last year on duty before his second retirement...

It had been refinished once as a blued gun when I got it, and I had it hard-chromed by Checkmate in Florida...Bar-Sto barrel and bushing, many Ed Brown parts, Meprolight night sights and giraffe bone grips make it rather unique...Shoots where it's pointed...Since its current carrier is still LE, it will be worn to at least one re-election BBQ......Ben

Do you all think I could be allowed in to your barbeque wearing my
Colt's Gold Cup in my Heiser Model 728 holster?
The belt is by Texas Gunslinger, the silver Navajo buckle is by
Nezzi and the knife is an Ultimate 1911.

Yes, as I mentioned earlier in my post. Engraved guns are the standard but are not necessarily exclusive to being a barbeque gun. Today any nice vintage, shiny, modern custom, or high-end stuff works. I've seen it all. Now there are some limits though. I wouldn't wear or bring something like a Hi Point and not expect to get some major razzing. Nice Gold Cup and rig by the way........

Toyman - That is a gorgeous holster Doc made for you. I love his 5 petal

As a total but parallel aside, one of the real keys to a barbecue gun is the holster. If you've got a fancy, tooled rig that happens to hide most of the gun then the real eye piece is the leather plus fancy stocks if you have fancy stocks.

There are several very pretty guns above that are "stock", but are quite handsome, and the holster will make the difference.

Rule of thumb - don't pull your guns out of their holsters at a barbecue. They're eye candy. You don't take off rings and bracelets and fancy watches, those are eye candy, too. OR necklaces and earrings, for that matter. You reduce the chance of an AD to around zero if no guns come out of their holsters and someone always has a loaded gun so stick to this rule if you have such a barbecue and have fun!

Here's mine...a 4" nickel .44HE 3rd Model (W&K Model of 1926) before and after I added some patina to the Grashorn elk antler stocks. It's riding in one of Bob Mernickle's carved cross-draw holsters. I also have a choice of knives depending upon what's being served at the BBQ!

Yesterday I saw a Dude in a Subway Sandwich Shop carrying Semi- Concealed.
He had a gun apparently in a slide type holster with the barrel sticking out from under his Tee Shirt.
So I saw a Sandwich Gun?

This is a Monroe Cnty Bar-BQ gun. These are kept in easy reach at outdoor gatherings. They are used on any protein source unlucky enough to pass by. In reasonable dragging distance to the fire.

Nice, a later model at that (flat bottom forestock)! I have both a 1954 and a 1942, absolutely love riot length shotguns.

Shipped Sept 4th 1975, my 5" M27-2 with presentation grips is as close to
a BBQ that I have.

Shipped January 14th 1964, and maybe my 6.5" M29-2.

Some of those others are true beauties.

I guess if I got invited to one of them high society Bar BQs I would have to use this Colt Commander. But would have to wear on a string around the neck , like Tuco , cause I ain’t got a fancy holster.

Not a Smith and Wesson, but here's one of my main barbecue guns in a beautiful barbecue rig made by our own Dave Keith (keith44spl), complete with our family brand on the holster.

Love that setup. I have a Randall 25-6 and it just feels so good. I'm a huge Randall Made Knife fan!
