I was looking at a S&W Model 57 no dash the guy received new in 1984 as a gift. I asked how he had a no dash new in 84, and he said although they stopped the pinned barrels and recessed cylinders in 82, they kept using some parts in continued manufacturing of them. This gun is a 57 no dash but does not have a pinned barrel. Something to think about if you are expecting a pinned barrel. Does this affect the value of the gun? It is a NIB never fired beauty!

I've seen S&W revolvers with pinned barrels with recessed cylinders and pinned without recessed cylinders around the 1982 changeover period.
Pinned & recessed does bring a premium in my neck of woods. How much? I'd estimate 10-20% on a model 57.
Let's see what others say.

Does the cylinder have the recessed charge holes?. Sounds like a transitional gun.

Yes, was transitional @ $1500 in box with receipts. Probably should have got it but had to refrain as I just bought one last week!

That's a pretty good price for a nice Model 57 with box and paperwork. A few months ago I picked up a minty nickel Model 57 (no box or goodies) at a local gun show. Asking price was $1500, but I got it OTD for $1200. I do have a penchant for Pinned and Recessed, but I might have made an exception in this case since it is a transitional model. Model 57s are starting to skyrocket in price, and they are not as readily available as some other N-frames. If the revolver is still available, perhaps the seller will negotiate some on the price and you could pick up a nice piece. Just sayin'.

They are nice guns... Although he received it as a gift in 1984 that's no guaranty that it was made that late... Is the serial number prefix an "N" or three letters probably starting with "A"?

I had a transitional 4" nickel at one time with a non-pinned barrel and recessed cylinder that I think it was an "N" prefix...

A 98% M57 P&R 4" just went at auction for 1875.00 It had been fired. I was watching it, because I was thinking of selling my new in case 57.. I have a transitional N prefix 629. No pin, but recessed. Not fired. Remember, at auction, you now have sales tax and shipping to deal with.

To answer your question, I think the lack of the pin detracts a bit, but I also think that the pin is becoming less of an issue as the supply of fine blued guns keeps shrinking.
I did not see a mention of the bbl length. I think about 100-150 high for 6". Toss up for a 4".

I will say this, within the last year I sold a P&R NIB m57 ( cardboard) for 1600.00. it was 6"

I bought a 95%+ M57 no dash P&R 6 inch blued last year for $1350. No box just the gun. In all honesty I like the 4 inch better.

I was looking at a no dash P&R 57 4 inch . 99% with correct grips and no box. The store sold it for 1200.00 OTD same day. Store owner said that the buyer got a good deal. I didn't know they were that much.

N frame guns can have a "N" prefix as late as 1986, although the transition to the three-letter code started in 1980.

I paid $1300 for a 90% "S" prefix (from 1968) M57 about 2-1/2 years ago. No box or tools, and no original stocks, and it has an aftermarket vent rib installed. The downgrade from 100% is due to no original stocks with it, a set of tiny scratches that don't go through the bluing on the left, but the rest is perfect. I put a set of Altamont stocks on it and it has become my favorite of all my revolvers.

Thanks all for the interesting input. I broke down and offered on it, got it for $1450. It is a transitional 4” safe queen “N” serial in the box, un-fired. The felt is gone, but I plan to re-flock. This is too addicting…..

Wondering what you think, True Gun Value puts the used M57 No Dash value at $1526 @80% condition based on recent sales. Do you all agree this is pretty close?

M57/MT Socom

I would have to agree with GSP Fan that the 4 inchers are tough to beat. I have had this S series for 10 yrs. My 6 inch, that just doesn't sound right, is also special to me since it has been with me for the past 43 yrs.

I bought a 6” no dash never fired in the box last week from GI, but I really wanted a 4”, so I bought it too. I’ll likely sell the 6”. Haven’t received either one yet!

At one time I thought I'd like to shoot a deer with a revolver and still do somewhat. I have a 6 1/2 M29 but it's nickel so I bought the 6 inch M57. I'm on the fence with keeping the 6 inch M57, it has a wonderful trigger and is fun to shoot but when I want to take a big bore revolver to the range the 4 inch M57 and M29 go.

You didn't mention in your original post that the Model 57 included the box and goodies. For a complete NIB package, I think you did really good at $1450. If you don't want to reflock the presentation case liners yourself, Forum member jcelect will do an excellent job for a reasonable price. Enjoy that .41 Magnum!

I have two M57, an 8 3/8" Nickel, that I payed $775 for about 2years ago and a 4" that I got in trade for a 19-4. I never could shoot the 19 well for some reason, thus the even trade. They are my favorites tied with my 624s.

When you get them make sure you throw up some pics.
