19-5 6" nickel price check

Being offered a 19-5 6" nickel with what looks like original grips. No box and the nickel is coming off on the cylinder. Owner is looking for a value of @$1000.

Not sure I see this value in it, but have not bought a Smith wheel gun in a while.

What's your opinion?
 
It's not worth $1000 even if the nickel is intact. I'd offer him $500 as long as the mechanical function is perfect, and I was willing to own a revolver with peeling nickel.

But I'm not.
 
Pictures would help and $1000 does seem high although nickel 19s with shorter barrels (and without flaking nickel) are at that level. I doubt that you'll get it for $500 but somewhere between there and $1000 is probably right in this market. I bought the 19-4 below a couple weeks ago for $700 OTD but it came with rubber grips so had to add the factory targets. First one I'd seen for sale in some time. . .at what seemed a reasonable price.

Owner said he thinks it is nickel loss from being in a holster.
 
If that is nickel flaking, not worth anywhere near $1000, more likely worth about half of that. It takes quite a bit of wear or abuse to get S&W's factory nickel plating to flake. Aftermarket nickel plating can sometimes be pretty easy to damage.
 
definitely NOT a $1,000 Model 19-5... like others have said.. maybe half that if you can live with it in that condition..
 
This 19-5 was under $800 (before shipping, taxes, etc) a couple months ago. I added the Thai combats, came with RB service/magna stocks. 2 1/2” guns bring more than longer barrels:
