In case anyone else is considering it, here’s my review of hard chroming my new 638 with only 50 rounds through it.

I had APW do the work based on recommendations from others. Service-wise, I think the owner may have been one of the rudest and worst to deal with, but I wasn’t looking to make friends, just get quality work. The other staff was great.

They did the disassembly and reassembly. They stripped everything, removed flaws and blasted to a matte finish. The aluminum was nickel plated first, and then exterior parts were hard chromed.

I absolutely did not like the finish due to the inconsistent sheen and flaws in the aluminum, including one exterior part they forgot to hard chrome. However, after I completely disassembled and hit all aluminum with a tiny bit of Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound, I really like the results. There are still a few blemishes that bug me a tiny bit for a $500 job, but nothing major.

None of the internals were hard chromed. They don’t offer this service due to it possibly messing up timing and function. Not an issue since before reassembling, I coated absolutely every single part in Renaissance Wax so I won’t have to worry about lubing the internals periodically.

Here’s a few pics. Overall, I’m very happy. Please forgive the rubber grips. I’m in the process of Tru Oiling my Tigerwood grips.

Not a criticism, but what was wrong with the original finish?

The original finish was great. I actually like the laminated aluminum look better than hard chrome. However, aluminum just scratches so easy and I wanted more durability. I accidentally scratched it the first time I disassembled it!😂

So you spent $500 refinish job on a $400 new revolver to each their own..

Huh? What's to be very happy about in that description? You sent a $450 revolver off for $500 finishing work that was incomplete and looked bad.

I was trying to say I was happy with the hard chrome after I put a bit of work into detailing the finish, not so much that I was very happy with that company.

$600 if you count the new grip! Yeah, I wanted it a bit tougher than just laminated aluminum and I just love the way wood grips look. 50 rounds through it and I doubt I’ll ever shoot it again, so it’ll last forever.

Truly Something Special!

Perfect mirror finish. Soooo much elbow grease.

I like the finished product! Did you keep track of the number of coats of Tru-Oil? I'm guessing around ten.

First thanks for showing off your revolver. Was it expensive? Yes but it resulted in a neat carry gun. Does anyone know how plating sticks to aluminum? I like humpbacks and carry a 649 no dash. The 638 would be lighter but the aluminum finish on my 642 peeled off quickly. Your finish might make for the perfect pocket revolver if it stays on the aluminum.

The way it was explained to me, hard chrome won’t electroplate well on aluminum. They first plated the aluminum with nickel, which sticks well to aluminum and also takes the hard chrome. The extra nickel step along with chemically stripping the plastic from the aluminum before bead blasting was a big part of the cost.

Looks nice and should last a long time!

My only concern is you need to shoot it often to be proficient so keep that in mind. I carried a 642/442 as a backup and at times spent so much time practicing that I qualified as well with them as my duty weapon.

As far as the money spent I have a Glock 43 and a Shield worked over by David Bowie and the modifications cost more than the firearm.

Bottom line is I got what I wanted and spent nobodies money but my own.

40 years later

Take a look at a hard chrome finish with decades of experience under her.
I'd do it again.
This was done by Armoloy. They don't do aluminum though.
It was THE hot ticket finish to prevent corrosion in the 80's.
Very durable so it will stand up well to pocket carry and IWB.

Around 30 coats total. However, a lot of those were sanded back to fill grain so I’m not sure what the true film thickness is. The final polish was 3 coats of Renaissance Wax. I also baked it for 2 100+ deg f days in the Texas sun.
