I made (yet another, and "last") impulse bid on Gunbroker that ended up "winning" a 4" M65-2. Turned out to be in worse shape than the pictures revealed.

I feel a little better about it after cleaning up the externals, but I can't get the grips/stocks off to examine the internals. The threads aren't actually stripped, but the female threaded part of the wood is spinning with the screw as if it was over-torqued enough to break off the threaded disc of wood from the body of the grip. Not only will it not back out, it also won't tighten enough to stop the grips from rattling on the frame.

Has anyone seen this? Is there a hack for this, short of drilling out the screw and destroying it?

thx

That'll take a lil doing but its not a dead in the water thing by far

What I'd do is very carefully with a rotary tool grind away the screw head so it can be pushed the rest of the way thru the stock since the bushing/nut is already spinning. This will separate the stocks from the frame. Only a little wiggle should be needed to get the stocks to "walk off" the blind pin that is at the bottom of the grip frame, same wiggle as normal for getting them off anyway. (using this method isnt that bad, you only need to focus on removing just the center of the screw head to break loose the whole screw head. see your pic for approx dia that is needed to be removed with this method)

Or you could get an old thin flat screwdriver bit (tip) and grind away the center to clear the stock screw itself. Then grind the remaining tips into a pair of fangs that you can use to push into the soft brass screw bushing/nut to keep it from spinning while unscrewing from the other side

The first one is going to be much easier but both would work, just depends on how you are with detail work

Theres also a third option if the stocks have enough "float" off the grip frame. Then slip two pieces of .005 brass shim stockbetween the stocks and the frame. Then take an eyeglass or extra thin small screwdriver and slip it between the brass shim stock. This may give you enough "bind force" to allow you to gently unscrew it like normal (pack of brass shim stock can be bought at Ace)

Can you put super glue between the brass, and the wood without getting it on the threads, and let it sit overnight?

Those grips look worn enough to me, that I would not worry about damaging them. I would replace them anyway

The threaded escutcheon is spinning in the stock hole?

The outside of that escutcheon has little ridges that are designed to bite into the wood. I suspect that the wood is gouged out and the threaded insert is fine. I’d swipe some sewing pins from the Mrs. and press them in between the escutcheon and the wood. That might wedge it in place enough to back the screw out.

Its an easy fix .Use a hot glue gun and press down firmly before it hardens. The hard glue will peel right off easily once your done.
