I haven’t been able to find very much on the 686–2 unfluted Classic Hunter there’s a lot of information out there on the -3
Trying to find out what the production numbers were and if the product code is the same as the -3
Thank you all in advance
Tom

The SCSW says product code 104249 was believed manufactured as a 686-3 in 1988 (5,000 of them). Do you know the product code on yours? If it’s the same, perhaps a stray 686-2-stamped frame was used.

I still regret not buying this one at the LGS three years ago

There are a few –2 out there, I’m just trying to find out more about them and I do not know because I do not have the box so I don't know the product code and have not been able to find much on the -2

Only difference I see is that one has a blued front sight blade and the other is stainless. However, you could probably order one either way.

Is the one sight stainless or just have lighter bluing than the other? I've never seen a stainless pinned ramp front sight - integral with the barrel, yes but not pinned. Doesn't mean it couldn't have happened though... And why would S&W put black sights on a "hunting" model instead of the more visible red ramp/white outline set?

I bought a -3 perhaps 15 years ago for something on the order of $450 from a young man who had inherited it and wasn't fond of revolvers. His relative had ditched the Hogue MonoGrip and replaced it with aftermarket stocks so I installed a nice set of genuine S&W checkered targets. It did not appear to ever have been fired so I haven't shot it either.

Tom,
If you have the box, why do you not know the product code?

Is the end label missing?

Just call the Factory, give Customer Service the serial number and ask for the Product Code.

I do it all the time when I do not have the original box

Sorry, I have since fix that post but I do not have the box or the product code
And I will give customer service a call to see if I can get that thank you and have a great evening

They are both blue or black one has a little bit of white paint on the previous owner put there. It is on my agenda to try to clean it off but I am unsure what to use as a cleaner
Any suggestions are welcome
Thank you guys
Tom
