Want to try an extended firing pin for a S&W Model 617 but buying one is a confusing chore. Some vendors say their pin won't work with the rimfire, some indicate they are specific for the 617, some don't indicate fitment issues at all.

So, does the 617 use a different firing pin than other K,L and N frame center fire revolvers or not.

Thanks

No expert, but I would think that yes, they would be different. IIRC, rimfire pins seem to be more of a rectangle shape and hit on the rim, whereas a centerfire pin is round and hits in the center. Are you talking about hammer mounted, or floating?

Thanks ..looking at the Midway extended pin they list the 617 as compatible...other manufacturers indicate theirs fit all models except 617.

Any rim-fire firing pin is not compatible with any center-fire revolver. One is designed to impact the RIM of the cartridge, and the other is designed to impact the CENTER of the cartridge.

Buy the one specified for your gun.

Not sure if can I post post a Midway link, but if you search Midway for:

Power Custom Extra Length Internal Firing Pin J, K, L and N-Frame Revolvers Steel

You'll note that the same fing pin is used in both rim and center fire revolvers.

This confusion is exactly why I posted the initial question.:D

I have come to my own conclusion...the longer pins are all the same...the only reason they flag them related to the 617 is that additional length could contact the cylinder when dry firing empty with the rim-fire revolver.

As long as you are aware of this....should be no problem.
