Default S&W model 42 classic 38 Special

Does anyone know anything about this gun. Any information would be appreciated. I believe it was made around 1970.

Welcome to the forum.

It's the Airweight (alloy frame, steel cyl) version of the Model 40 all steel concealed hammer Centennial model introduced in 1952 with grip safety in the back strap. Discontinued in 1974 then reintroduced in 1992 to 1993.

Several models no longer in current production were made in the Classic series.

The Classic version of the Mod 42 was made in 2009-2012 product code 150502 as the Model 42-1, with grip safety, blue finish only. Your gun should be marked Mod 42-1 in the yoke if it's from the Classic series.
