617 Isn't New Anymore! Speedloader?
I picked up a new 617 two days ago so it was overdue for a range trip! I took a variety of ammunition including CCI SV, Norma TAC22, and SK Standard +. The sights dialed in easily and it shoots great! 500 rounds later I'm happy!
My 686 went along for the trip, too. I sent more 357 down range to feed my recoil needs!
I'm considering a speedloader for the 617... I'm seeking opinions on an Ansac, a Speed Beez, or something else?
Thanks,
Jim

Speedloaders for 617s
I have been shooting 617(10 rounds) for years in speed steel matches. The absolute best speedloaders are DS-10s for quick, problem free reloading. There are a number of us who compete year'round speed matches both indoors and out. No one uses anything other than DS-10s. you can also buy pre-drilled reloading blocks that make refilling the speed loaders easy and quick.
Enjoy your 617.

617 Isn't New Anymore! Speedloader?
Don’t get much better than some deck shooting with a 617! This one wears some round to square Culinas!

The DS-10 speed loaders are the best. I've been using them for over 20 years and still have some of the originals.
The new model is better because it's easier to grab and just naturally dumps the ammo faster. I use my 617 for Steel Challenge and if I really screw up and need a reload I'm glad I have my DS-10.
The Speed Beez doesn't hold the bullets as securely as the DS-10. They also cost much more.
You can get DS-10s from Revolver Supply Com.com for $ 26 each I believe.

This thread reminded me that I need to get something like this for my 617. I just ordered the Speed Beez bundle with speedloader and case. This is more than adequate for my needs for steel challenge shooting. It's too bad that HKS won't make a loader for 617, since they have it for the 9-shot guns.

Unless you are competing in one of the speed games, speed loaders really aren't necessary. My 617 is my relaxation gun. I like to take it to the range when nobody else is there and just plink my stress away. Trying to do it quickly would ruin the whole thing for me. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

I wholeheartedly agree. For me, I'm going to like loading up the box with 100 rounds in sets of 10 so that I can reload the gun quicker at the range. But loading it one round at a time is fine too.

I can appreciate you guys that want to relax and shoot and reload at your leisure but if you ever get addicted to the speed sports like many of us are you will find out that speed loaders (in most sports) are required to be able to compete. The main purpose is so you're not holding up the next shooter in line.

I almost have enough DS-10s to get me through an entire Steel Challenge Match without having to reload. I load them up at home and make it through a majority of the stages. I still load a few from my loading blocks but I hate holding up the line.

Depends on the weather for me. On the sort of summer days we get in Georgia that can melt the waxy lube off a 22 bullet I like using a loading block with a DS-10 speedloader. In cooler weather I often leave the speedloader and blocks at home and load when I get to the range.

Another recommendation for the DS-10 speedloaders. I started shooting Rimfire Challenge matches last summer and, as the only revolver shooter, I was worried about slowing the match down. Instead, two loading blocks and two DS-10s help me keep pace with the bottom feeders.
People at the matches, and at the range, are fascinated by the existence of a 10-shot .22 speedloader and just have to give it a try.
Our rimfire matches typically run 150-250 rounds, so using two 50 round loading blocks plus two DS-10s keep my thumbs from getting sore the way a lot of the semi-auto shooters do.
As an aside to DS-10-Speed, thanks for the great product!

When you have a 617 10-shot, and the wife has a Glowforge
Since we are shooting monthly rimfire matches, and I’m the only wheelgunner, I’d been happy with my 2 DS-10s and 2 50-round loading blocks. The past few matches, however, have been rather cold and wet, and reloading the blocks was tedious and even painful at times. So I started looking for a larger block and case. The wife said “find your case, I’ll make your block.”
We’ve collaborated and had fun and still have a few adjustments to make (acrylic glues are hit or miss) but I think the first full-size prototype came out well.
Shame about the glue ruining the transparency.
The ultimate goal is to stack two of these in the case for a full 500 rounds ready to go.

My only problem with the DS-10s is that they don't fit my six shooters. But for the one ten round 617 the DS-10s are super!

If you really want to go fast when reloading you need a setup like this. You can get the speed loader holders from RevolverSupply.com.

I'm partial to 5 Star's. I don't think they list the 10 shot on their site but if you call them they will make you some.

I'll be the odd man out and went with Ansac. No particular reason as to the manufacturer but I did like the polished stainless look. I also like to spend lazy afternoons as others mentioned, plinking and taking my time, esp. with western six shooters. It's nice to have 10 on board but there are times reloading them, well for lack of a better term, sucks so hence the Ansac.
I like the Speed Beez "kit" where you have everything in the case, loader and block. I made my own also as others mentioned some time ago with an Ansac block and loader using an empty plastic case and some leftover PE foam from another project. It's small, about 9.5" X 6.5" but it carries the block loaded, the loader filled and another 50 in a rack so 160 total.
The hardest part was making the label out of permanent vinyl and an old English Script.

Agree they aren't necessary. But they sure are nice to keep old, cold fingers from fumbling with itsy bitsy 22 shells in the winter. Load up a 100rnds in the speed block at home in warm comfort and head for the range in any weather.
FWIW,
Paul

Second prototype for 250 rounds. Worked very well in today's match. Used Chicago screws to allow for disassembly when cleaning is needed.

This thread has really exploded in the best possible way. A simple question with simple answers but full of 617 speed loader gun porn. Love it.
Too pricey for my tastes. Just one Ds10 sits in a drawer as I like handloading them 1 at a time at the range. Slows down my pace as my targets are usually empty 22 cases.

Old 10 shot loaders to current design
The white loaders were the first DS10's in 2005, then a few other versions followed.
