You could make some service style grips with say 1/8 or 3/16" thick aluminum pretty easy. Use a compass to make the radius of the 1/2 circle at top of grip frame. cut that out with a jeweler's saw and file/sand smooth them. With grip pin out, hold in place and trace grip frame, cut out and file/sand smooth. Clamp in place and drill through grip pin hole for grip pin. Once you had 2 of those clamp them together and match drill for grip screw. Tap one side say 8/32 and recess the other a bit or just use a round headed machine screw Round off outside edges of panels. Thin light strong. You could texture the faces with a punch if you wanted or get an X metal stamp and make a pattern. Want them a littler thicker and covering up part of the upper frame, use aluminum of correct thickness then after putting some texture on aluminum use quality epoxy to add some G10 to outside and shape to what you want..
I guess you could make the service panels out of G10 to start with. Tough stuff.

Barami grip may be worth checking. Thin with 'hook' for IWB carry. Simple but works...perfect for a 36.

Steelslaver you give a well said path to thin grips. Wish had the skills as you to attempt but sadly no...but really like your idea.

If you can tolerate imitation MOP the Altamont Legacy is the smallest grip I have seen. They came on the S&W Heritage series revolvers. You can find the wood versions from time to time. I have the the Altamont Classic grips on a J Frame and they are nice and thin. Very similar to the grip that is on the current model 36.

Thought of that avenue also but with Gorilla tape for a more professional look. Just remove the pin!

I like the Delta Grip for hard-kicking J-frames. Absorbs recoil, and is flat and light.

I bought my grips from Ahrends, and specified unfinished. I also like them thin, so I re profiled them with 60 grit sand paper. Just keep an eye on the screw so it won't "stand proud". I think shorter screws are available. I also changed the finger groves. More rounded and shallower. That is, I rounded off the points. Then, use finer grit to suit, followed by a Tung Oil finish. I also have reworked Altamont grips, since Ahrends are no longer available.
When sanding, be careful not to make the width less. Stay away from the edges, otherwise, the grip frame will be too wide.
I have also cut grips down to boot grips, I prefer my pinky finger under the grip, so all of my grips are "boot". The only way to get less grip would to go the James Bond route, and use "skeleton grips" Maybe just two turns of duct tape around the grip frame!

Rick

For the non DIY crowd (myself included), the Eagle Secret Service boot grips are pretty thin and nice looking...to boot.

I made a small set that were just as wide as the frame, in the old service style. They were for my 317 snub… I would not want to shoot them on even a 38!

The Hogue Bantam Boot Grips are pretty minimalist and can be had in several woods, G10 or the rubber. I have the wood (Pau Ferro) and I'm happy with them. They're certainly not as thin as you'd get using Steelslaver's suggestion.

Have Jframe grips from Tyler T, Barami, Pachmyer, Crimson Trace, Hogue, S&W Target, S&W Boot & DeSantis installed. All are what i call traditional grips with similar hand position. Maybe should try Delta but they are just too dare i say...Ugly with their different grip angle. Concealment or no looks make a difference to ME. But ya know that's why we have chocolate & vanilla, so we have choices of taste. As women we choose the one who suits our tastes. So yes looks do matter...to me.

The Eagle grip owner was at SASS Mule Camp in Ga. in 2001. He offered to let borrow a pair for Ruger Bisley Vaqero to try out for the match. Trusting guy cause coulda disappeared in crowd. After two day match went back & bought'em...nice. Guess he felt a cowboy named Dixie Ranger was trustworthy.

Sounds like you have the skill for custom grips if you have the time. Always room for a skilled maker.

Right now I am out of town on a job. I need a reminder when I get home. Although they pay me almost as much as I believe I am worth, I would rather be at home doing something in my own shop

You could buy a set of originals and thin them out to your liking - then refinish with Tung Oil or similar. Since you would be removing wood and refinishing them anyway, they need not be in great shape. Should be relatively inexpensive.
NOTE: Personally, I'd not use thinner than original grips as those are pretty much the bare minimum you need to hold on to a J frame while shooting it with anything more than anemic 148 grain wad cutters. That said, for the price of a used set of grips and some sandpaper - give it a shot if that is your desire.

I tried a set of the previous mentioned Eagle Secret Service boot grips once. I found them to be too thin. Felt recoil was down right nasty.
Personally, I prefer wider grips to spread felt recoil over a larger area. The current factory rubber boot grip works fine for me. Its pretty much a copy of the old Uncle Mike's design.
OP might like the Eagles though.

I have Eagle Secret Service grips on this square butt Mod. 36. I like them a lot on the square butt. Did not like them on a round butt J frame.

Here's my 940-1 with both the Ergo grip and the Hogue Bantum grip. There wasn't much difference in the thickness of each, but I really didn't like the grip angle of the Ergo. If someone wants the Ergo, PM me and I'll send them to you to get them out of the house. I think they're still laying around here somewhere.
Unless you put some monster grip on a J-frame, isn't the thickest part of the gun the cylinder? OP, are you asking because you (or someone you're posting for) have very small hands?

Gotcha. From my two photos, you can see the overall package is shorter with the Bantum grips than the Ergo because the Ergo's are somewhat long to get all three fingers on it.

You can go too thin. If concealment as well as a decent grip are concerns, it's hard to find anything better than standard factory wood stocks.

As mentioned the Barami Hip Grip is very thin. I’ve used one on a 2” 36. You can get them on EBay in black or white for as little as $10 new in package

It seems to me that grip selection is always going involve some kind of compromise. I am guessing that your quest is to find the most concealable grip or stock is the question. I agree with rockquarry's assessment. I do have a set of the factory J-frame wood stocks, but I don't use them on my 38 & 357 J frame(s). They don't offer a certain amount of grip control as compared to Hogue's Rubberized Bantam Grip in my experience, albeit a compromise. I do have an extensive selection of j frames grips in my collection. But, it's Hogue's Bantam grip that surpasses them all. It's a bit of a shame that S&W no longer installing the Bantam's on the Airlite Ti models.
I digress. Lastly, I would give the S&W's wood stocks a try... and btw, they are of the old school design, not the modern wood grips.

Since you asked again...
You can try finding a very early set of J frame service stocks of the pre-war style (silver medallions), which are even thinner than Magna stocks.
You can also thin out J frame Magna stocks as mentioned in post # 11 above, but they won't wind up a lot less wide than the width of the stock screw.

Another vote for Eagle Secret Service grips or Uncle Mikes boot grips.

I have the Hogue wood bantam boot grips on one of my Js. They are pretty minimalist and concealable and look nice. However, if shooting magnums they do sting.
