They are all good so it depends on what you're using it for.

Hi:
I have been using a Model 638 for a "Back-Up" for a while. I am very satified with it. I use W-W Silvertips standard velocity as carry ammo.

The Bodyguard gives you the most flexibility. It slips into and out of your pocket nicely with no snagging, like the 642 (and unlike the 637), and you can still cock the hammer and fire it single action, like the 637 (and unlike the 642). I've had them all and settled on the 638 a long time ago.

I have a 642 and a 638. The 638 won out, as I like the hammer as an option. The 638 is with me most of the time.

I don't remember ever reading or hearing any real complaints about any of these.
For myself, I started with the steel Centennial type (640) and later added the Airweight Centennial (642). They are both terrific handy little J frames.
The trigger action on the Centennial can be made smooth enough that I haven't felt the need for single action.
Best on whichever one you buy as your first J frame.

I have a 638. Love it. I can carry it several different ways. If I dress up in nice clothes, its one of the few guns I can simply put in a pants pocket (although I use a pocket holster). I have some bigger Pachmayr Decelerator grips I can put on if I want to just shoot it for fun, but I can do the little grip and hit the target too. I finally got used to the recoil (light weight guns all kick). I've had this in my pocket at a midnight church service and at a funeral...nobody every could tell because it is very concealable. My advice...you won't be sorry. Check out this website...

I have both a M638 and M642 and like both. I do like the M638 better and carried it most of the time until my son "borrowed" it from me. Now I carry the M642.

I have really become fond of the Centennial style J frames (432PD and a 642), and use one as an EDC. I always had a lot of respect for Masaad Ayoob, and it increased dramatically when I read that he preferred the Centennial style over the Bodyguard and that the Centennial was his preferred model. The more someone agrees with you, the smarter they are.
Regards,
Dave

Newbie Question re: 638's
I've never seen a 638 other than on-line .... does "shrouded" mean the hammer can still be thumbed back, setting it in single action mode" ?
Do owners often fire a 638 in Single Action on the Range ?
I looked at Bassoneer's target results the link in his posting takes you to ,,,, pretty neat results. Wonder if those were all Double Action shooting?

If in a no-lock like a M38 ok,but no ILS for carryguns. Find a old model or newer 442,642 no-lock.
