I was watching an unboxing video of a new 642 and there was a red plastic ring in the cylinder. I’ve bought several new J-frames over the years, but none came with one. Anyone know when s&w started doing this? Just curious.

Can’t answer the question but it wouldn’t be surprising if dealers removed them before putting the guns out for display.
I recently bought a new revolver at Sportsman’s Warehouse and the counter guy took the safety ring out and tossed it into a small bin on the counter. When he walked away I took it back…I paid for it.

Have yellow rings from Ruger from several purchases recently. I've not seen red S&W rings.

I look at those as being similar to a chamber flag. The gun can't have ammo in it if the disk is in there.
Every new S&W revolver that I have purchased had the red cylinder ring included.
