Grips for the 686 plus.....
I had a lot of success with the model 60 grip thread, so I thought I'd ask about my 4" gun. It is heavy and I do have small hands, but I love shooting the gun. It's a great teaching tool as well. I just wish my grip were more comfortable. It's effort to my hands around it and I'm thinking, while the grip is good, it's too big for me. What are some good options for this? I don't often shoot magnum loads, mainly .38s so I'm open to suggestions.

Well, I guess I won't be much help, I like these:
However, this might be a good alternative:
The 3" and the 4" came with those factory goodyears on them but, years ago, that 2.5" 686+ came with those gorgeous rosewood stocks (methinks they're factory original but I am uncertain). Maybe that's what you need.

I discovered these Klinsky stocks from the Czech Republic. The fit and finish is top notch and they look great. I have average size hands, and they are very comfortable to shoot with. The gun in the rear is a 581 (square butt). The gun in the front is a 625 (round butt). The circumference is more round than most combat grips and allows a solid and comfortable purchase. BTW, these were bought on Ebay.

The grips on my gun are good but it's a little too much. I'm thinking something slimmed down some...not sure, but I like the idea of getting a grip that is less wide. Is this a round butt or square on my gun? I'm assuming giving the age, it's round.

This looks nice...but I've been debating between wood or a Hogue mono grip. I would like something that doesn't add to the weight.

I really like the talo stocks that came on my 686 deluxe. (Though they ain't pretty) the conversion grip has enought heal to balance my 6" 686 well.

I recently bought a 686+ as well and I have medium hands and I went with the Pachmayr's Compac Grips that cover the back strap and I am very pleased with them, even with magnum loads.

I use Pachmayr Compacs on my 3" 686+. I have medium size hands, they work for me, and have a covered backstrap which helps with recoil.

Ma'am,
I have the same model with the same grip. I just took it out and held it to see if I could picture what problem(s) a common lady's-size hand would encounter when they hold it. Is there a way to get pictures of you holding it, one from each side and one from the rear? I'm wondering, for instance, if your index finger can reach the trigger properly in its double-action position without having to shift the base of the thumb to the right, and forward, in order for the finger to reach the said position. If that is what you're running into than the backstrap of the grip frame is simply too far from the trigger for you, and I don't know if a different grip would help. If it's just the thickness that's uncomfortable then a thinner grip would help, but I'm not aware of any thinner grip than the factory has mounted on the gun.
Best wishes with this issue. I recall the words of one of my high school teachers: "Where there's a will there's a way!"
Regards,
Andy

I’ve had numerous options on mine over the years. Nice thing about the L frames is that they share stocks with K frames, so there are tons of options out there. Just make sure you’re looking for round butt, or round-to-square conversions.
Most recently … The Ahrends Combats (in Maple) are nice, but my hand really likes the feel of these Altamonts that are currently sitting on it. Then again, when it rode my hip while hunting I just used the factory goodyears.

It seems S&W offer two types of factory rubber grips for the gun. Is one thinner than the other, or does the less pronounced finger grooves make a difference? I like the Hogue bantam grip too as it may make grabbing the gun easier. Does anyone use a Hogue mono grip?

VZ for me
I know a lot of guys tend to like smooth revolver grips but I prefer some bite, they are relatively skinny too

You might could try the factory grips that come on the short barrel 686s.

Grips for range or carry? For the latter, I prefer round-butt grips for concealment and fitting the palm. I avoid rubber grips, because they tend to get entangled with clothing, especially in hot weather. Wood or G-15 work best for me.
Magnum recoil is tamed by increasing the width of the back. Rubber doesn't help. The curved back strap allows the gun to roll in your hand, while finger notches allow you to return to battery quickly without adjusting your grip.

There are several round butt options...............
For the 686, but with mongo hands, I prefer the stock tires for my PP-4!

Nice 686! How's that power port treating you? I find the one on my Carry Comp pretty effective.

With a four inch 686 plus, it's strictly for range and defense. Leaning towards rubber since it's a work horse and not for show.

Pachmayr 03270 Compact Grips, S&W K & L Frame Round Butt Black (03270) This is what I bought for mine and it works great, and better for CC.

As you can see in my post #2 above, the 3" and 4" 686+s have different factory goodyears. I like them both, they're very comfortable. But I do NOT carry those guns; I admit to not being good at concealing larger handguns so I don't even try:
Concealing big guns - how?
But carried that 2.5" many times in an El Paso Saddlery shoulder rig - I cannot recall offhand which model or if they still make it but it works perfectly with the 2.5" revolver.

Well, she has been just sitting in the safe with the rest of the gang, I need to get it out to the range.

I always liked the description in the book:

Lost in translation!

Although not particularly attractive, I like the Altamont reproduction "coke" grips. They feel nice in my average size mitts.

Since the OP mentioned smaller hands, and has Hogues on there already, may I suggest going to the Hogue website and looking at the following options: (1) Either Round-butt or Conversion (Round-to-square), K,L grips. (2) Either Top Finger Groove, or No Finger Groove. (3) Ultra Compact Bantam Grips. Variety of materials and woods available. I'll bet there's something there that fits better for you.
