Default 624 Trifecta Complete

I still have a few holes to fill in my collection, all 4 inch guns. I finally filled one of those holes the other day with this 4 inch model 624. The brand new box and the combat grips grabbed my attention. I'd never seen combats on a 624 and the big book makes no mention of them, only target stocks. I figured someone goofed up and left a set on the gun when it was put up for sale until I looked again at the box label and sure enough, there was CS under stocks. So, original to the gun, bonus. I took a handful of pics for your enjoyment. Dirty pics will come soon!

Thanks for looking and share yours if you gottem. Pizza Bob, I know you have a sweet looking set of 624s.

Don't think I've ever seen combats on a 4 inch 624, nice to know that at least one gun shipped that way. I've had the six and four for 20 years or more. . . .but I'm still looking for a three inch. Very nice threesome.

I completed my 624 trio last year by getting a 6” 624, in the box, at a local auction. Back in 2019 I got the 3” and then the 4” in less than two months when they turned up as consignments at my local shop. I then spent three years waiting for a 6” to turn up locally. The 624’s are nice guns.

If anyone is looking for a 4” no dash unfired 624 hit me up. I happen to be selling one. Seems like quite a few guys collecting the triplets.

Edit - scratch that. I just found out there was a recall on these early no dash guns and mine fell into the group and is being sent back to S&W to have the cylinder checked out.

I just got back from my range and am glad to say I'm very happy with this new addition. I put 45 rounds of 240 gr lswc rounds with a max load of 6.6 gr CFE-P down range and for a first time out and open sights (which I suck at) I think I did alright. The sa trigger pull measured at 3.25 lbs so I won't be fooling with that.

Ain't clean no more.

I have the 6.5 inch 624 which set me off on a quest to see what other 44 specials I could get (my too my wife's chagrin) the 3" 24-3 was the second one, Then came the 4" 24-3 and ended my quest. Frank

Now I want to have a 686 in every barrel length. Beautiful collection and an incredible find with combat stocks, always feels cool to find something different like that.

Ewww, a dirty gun! It sure looks good! And the Combats are a plus. Great shooting!

I was in the LGS today and they happened to have a 4" 624 on the shelf. No box or extras, just the gun, and it was in pretty good shape. The shop owner said it was a customer's "Grandpa's gun" and the young man just wanted the money for it.

It came home with me! I've had a couple of 6.5" 624's in the past, but this is my first 4 incher.

Congrats on your trifecta!

Nice! There’s something about a 4” N-frame that just looks right to me.

Hey Vette, nice set.. I was wondering if the new 4" is a Square Butt or a Round Butt frame... I see the grips are square but I've seen square combats that fit the round butt frame. For some reason I thought all the sub 6" barreled 624's were RB's and can sport both types of grips.

Either way that is a great 4" and nice shooting offhand @ 15 Yards...

I see you shot 5 instead of 6 shot groups... Just like a Silhouette match, hahaha. I bet she'll do nice if you ever decide to run the new 4" for a Sil Match for fun or seriously.

Thanks for the kind words Hammy. Yup, 5 shot groups just like in silhouette land. If I remember correctly S&W began making all guns with the round butt grip frame around 96. The 4" 624 was an 85 production gun so still sq butt. The 3" guns like your 24-3 were a special order by Lew Horton and the round butt was part of the want list.

That makes Total Sense! One can run square butt grips and round butt grips on a Round Butt... But not the other way around so that totally makes sense everything is an RB since 96.

Lew was thinking ahead of his time! His Special Order project sure has made GB a good bit of commission as of the last 5 years or so when the 3" goodness craze hit. I see why they are so desirable.

When is your club's next Silhouette Match? I'd like to get down that way and pop some steel in September after it cools off a little bit! I'll run my M24 that match if you run your's, Hahaha!

The 255gr Keith's I have rated at 1,000fps are extremely accurate out of the 3" M24... Probably because the Keith Bullets are so long they get a lot of real estate/contact with the lands and groves spinning down the barrel.

This Saturday!
No .44 action from me. Hoping .45 bullets are enough bigger to get an extra few hits.

Ok, so it's the first Saturday of the month... I'm already going with my little brother to my indoor club tomorrow but October is even better for cool weather so that will work out next month.

Last time I was at your club I was using a 3" barreled M29 "Mountain Back Packer" as it's in the Woods Gun rotation. Even with the 3" barrel I'd get the silhouette next to the one I popped to fall as well several times that day. Ammo was Prvi-Partizan's 300 grain SJHP's.

You should get similar performance using 255gr "Keith's" in .45ACP... The Loads I use are 255gr+P's rated at 930fps so still comfortable to shoot all day and plenty of "Pop" behind them to get a two-fer!

Pretty sure I saw that four inch up for sale. In any event I noticed the combats on the one I saw and also noticed that they were football relieved not cut-outs. So you got a rare set of combats to boot.

I ran almost 60 rounds of the Prvi-Partisan 300gr SJHP's last Saturday and another 20 or so of the Hornady "Flex-Tips" in the M629 3" Mountain Back Packer... The Nephew ran another 18 with the Prvi's and he said that gun, grips, and ammo felt "so natural" to him of which I was surprised as most don't like running "Heavy 300grainer-s" thru the 3" but he didn't even want to wear my shooting gloves and hit center mass shots at 15 Yards. I was certainly proud of him...

I ran another 30 rounds of the CCI 200gr "Flying Ashtrays" thru the M24 of which it LOVED. Point of aim to point of impact was almost surgical with medium recoil. These .44's whether Specials or Heavies run well and are a pleasure to shoot 100 rounds in a session. I think the nephew is on the hunt for a 3 to 6" .44Magnum Smith now because he loved both the M24 and M629 so much... It's in the genes these semi-snub .44's I tell you guys!

The 4" Model 624 is one of my favorite .44's. Beautiful to see, handle and shoot. One of Elmer Keith's favorite's!
